Standard 2.0

Element 2.2 Candidates understand and can create and evaluate a

comprehensive, rigorous, and coherent curricular and instructional school
program.

Activity: Lead extra curricular activity: Jazz Ensemble

Time: 6-8 hours per month, approximately 50 per year

Artifact:
Picture of the Jazz Ensemble from the Concert

Description: The Jazz Ensemble is an audition-only after-school music group that rehearses once a week. This
group performs more difficult music than the regular band classes and requires a higher level of commitment as
students stay after school and have to commit to practicing the music and performances that are outside of the school
day. This group performs several styles of music including blues, pop, funk, and latin. The Jazz Ensemble closes
each concert and always plays crowd pleasing tunes.

Reflection:
This group is a joy to work with. All of the students are looking for an extra challenge and understand the work that
needs to be done to continue having excellent, crowd-pleasing performances. The instruction is rigorous and because
of the dedication of the students we are able to delve into detailed aspects of the music. The students regular
practice and weekly rehearsals help to make this program comprehensive, as well as their performances for the
school and in the community.
