Critical Reading

Summary
My article Do They Stay or Do They Go is about to figure out the reasons why the
minority of a gender dominated major switch to a major where the gender is the majority. The
scientists gave some possible explanations as to how males and females feel when they are the
minority. For females, they feel uncomfortable and feel overwhelmed by the expectations that is
expected of them. Also for females, stereotype threat makes them feel like they are incapable of
being in the certain field they choose because there is a stereotype that females are not good in
math and science. On the other hand males feel like they have an advantage entering as a
minority because they have more opportunities. However males do suffer stereotype threat too.
Their other peers could make them feel unmasculine or feel like the major that they choose has
little value because it is dominated by women. The scientist hypothesized it is because of these
factors that make the gender switch and choose to take a sample of college students as their
experiment After conducting the experiment, the scientists hypothesized was not fully supported.
The scientists also said there are other factors that come into play with the genders personal
experience that could not be accounted for with the experiment as to why they switch. The
conclusion further research has to done to better understand this topic.
