Q-1 Why do you think Cirque du Soleil has become a worldwide and multicultural
success?

A-1 Cirque du Soleil has always focused on innovation rather than doing better. Their
each show was organized by the combination of imagination and technology. They keep
on expanding all over the places by working with creators from different parts of the
world that brings with their different ideas and knowledge. Today the Cirque du Soleil
has 3000 employees that speak 25 different languages which brings multicultural success
for them. They have always given proper care to their stakeholders that helped them in
keeping good relations with them. Also they provide with every possible comfort to their
performers keeping in mind that they are the reasons of their success. The company keeps
itself as their competitor which motivates them to work differently each time. Also they
stated that we believe in how we can do it different this time rather than how to do it
better. They have stage setup with two micro environments and for live performances.
They have organized their shows in almost all the continents. Now they have setup in
celebrity ships also. Today they have reached the market of approximately $1 billion each
year in last two decades which completely proves their state of success.

Q-2 Investigate the concepts of Blue Oceans companies and discuss how you think
it applies to Cirque du Soleil?

A-2 The term Blue Ocean Concept is derived from the book named Blue Ocean
Strategy written by W. Chan Kim and Renee Mauborgne. Blue Ocean companies
represent all the industries which is not in existence today. It is a business theory that
suggests the companies for a better upbringing search for ways to gain uncontested
market place rather than engaging in traditional competitions. It consists of an undefined
market space in other words known as Opportunity. This concept describes how
companies traditionally work in red Ocean conditions where businesses fight with each
other for a better position in market place. According to Blue Ocean Concept strategy
Companies should find a way to work in a market place that is free from competitors.
Blue Ocean Company Offers Entrepreneurs four Co-Creation Sessions with the
management team which focuses on three areas:

a. Insight into where the Organization currently stands.

b. Overview of what needs to be done.
c. Outlook of How to get there.

I feel Blue Ocean applied a very challenging approach in Cirque du Soleil. Cirque du
Soleils blue ocean strategic move challenged the conventions of Circus Industry. It
achieved to a level of profit that took more than hundred years for big Industries such as

Ringling Brothers and Barnum & bailey to get this level of profits. One of the main
reason behind its success is they already realized that to win in the future, Industries must
stop competing with the established organizations instead they should create blue oceans
of uncontested market place and make the competition relevant.

Q-3 How would you describe Guy Laliberte as a leader?

A-3 Guy Laliberate is an innovative leader who calls himself as a chief clown of the
Cirque du Soleil. His vision of circus was completely different from the traditional circus;
he mixed circus arts with street entertainment, music, unique costumes and different acts
of athleticism. This creativity made Cirque du Soleil world famous. His style of
leadership is Participative, the themes Cirque perform, comes from the staff and
sometimes comes from Laliberte. He believes that creative work places will come up
with unique ideas which will improve the business; he believed that fostering creativity in
the work place will give a chance for creators to develop their ideas to the fullest.
He believes in team work and recognizes every individual team members involvement is
required to achieve the common goal. Every team member has their own strengths, and
Guy Laliberate identify these strengths and utilize them for team success. He is ready to
accept mistakes and learn from the mistakes. Cirque hires people who take risks, they
encourage candidates to perform what they havent did it before, they evaluate candidates
courage, teamwork, generosity along with creative skills
Courage is one of the best qualities leader should have, Guy Laliberte is one of
the courageous leaders who can take risks, and one example is when they decided to
perform at Los Angeles Art Festival, there was enough money to take his circus to the
show but have no money to bring back the team after show; the deal with organizers of
the festival was that if the show was success then they will get paid, else they had no
money for travelling back home. In this situation Guy Laliberte took the risk to perform
at Art Festival, and eventually the show was very successful that this made Cirque du
Soleil dominate the global shows.
Guy Lalibertes courage, risk taking qualities and innovative thinking made him a
successful leader and also made Cirque du Soleil world famous.
