Zanabria | Hector Zanabria Mrs. Gallegos Language Arts 2, Period 2 10 March 2017 Police are becoming the criminals In May, Washington post analyzed that 385 fatal police shootings in the united states that had occurred so far in 2015. The post noted its number, which came out to two officer-involved shooting deaths per day, was more than twice the rate that the government had recorded over the past decade. In the article “Police Brutality and abuse of power” by Mai Nowlin it explains how police abuse their power by hurting people. They also lie and shoot first and ask questions later. In another article “Excessive or reasonable force” by John Wihbey it explains how police are brainwashed to believe minorities are more likely to be the criminal unlike a white suspect. Wihbey also says even well trained officers are bad under pressure. As a result, police abuse their power because they destroy property and lie about situations. Opponents of this view would argue that police don’t abuse power because they are poorly trained and their own lives are at risk. However, police still abuse their power because they pull the trigger without thought and create panic themselves. Police abuse their power because they destroy property and lie about situations. In the article, “Police brutality and abuse of power” by Mai Nowlin, the author states that,” They are bursting into homes (often the wrong ones) shooting and killing people” (Nowlin1). This means police are irresponsible of their tasks. This helps to reveal that police shouldn't be trusted with their authority and power. Another reason why police are abusing their power by lying in their reports. For example, Mai Nowlin argues that,” In many cases the police have been found to Zanabria 2 have falsified reports, planted evidence and flat out been the aggressor. (Nowlin1). This shows police aren’t eligible to complete their duties because they don’t even tell the truth just to save themselves from trouble. This is significant because people can’t trust or rely on police to protect them if even the police are the ones causing danger and injustice Opponents of this view would argue that police don’t abuse their power because police aren’t trained well enough and are trained to believe that minority suspects are more dangerous, In the article,” Excessive or reasonable force by police?” it says,” Some research has shown that even well-trained officers are not consistently able to fire their weapon in time before a suspect holding a gun can raise it and five first...” (Wihbey!). This means even experienced and ‘uncorrupt cops can’t work well under pressure. This is important because police should get tougher and better training to help them in a life or death scenario. Another example of how police don’t abuse their power is when the author states that” The 2010 national institute of justice report also conclude that non-white suspects were more likely to be injured than white suspects.” (Whibey3) This shows police’s views on non-white suspects are more likely to be the criminals, This helps to reveal that police aren’t just trained poorly but influence the cops in training to believe badly about non-white suspects. Experienced cops might share their experiences in the field and might scare the cops in training and makes them believe minorities are dangerous people and to always think badly about them. Although opponents would argue that police don’t abuse their power because they aren’t trained well enough and are trained to believe that minority suspects are more dangerous, the reality is the police still abuse their power because they create panic and hurt innocent people. For example, the author argues that” As police brutality becomes more commonplace one is left to wonder if the public can ever really feel safe and protected by the very ones supposedly Zanabria 3 charged with that duty.” (Nowlin1). This shows that police aren’t stopping crime but starting it. This is important because police aren't doing their duty but in fact, they are doing the opposite. Another example of how the police abuse their power is by hurting civilians for no reason and creating panic. The author explains that” They are shooting people in the back then claiming the person again had a weapon or came at them threateningly.” (Nowling]). This means that police kill people in panic or on purpose for their own benefits. This helps reveal that police should be changed a lot or just disappear because they are just increasing crime on the streets they claim to protect. In conclusion police brutality is an abuse of power because they destroy property, lie about situations, create panic, and hurt innocent people. If police brutality and the abuse of power continues to occur, then riots and panic would roam the streets. Therefore, t combat this, abuse of power, people need to create protest in front of the police departments because we have to show them we can fight back and defend ourselves. People can do this by posting things on social media to join in for the cause before a civil war breaks out. We should unite despite our differences because if we don’t, we'll all suffer equally and the situation would just become worse. fleclar Zansbrts Introd Uck?sn | In may the washinglen pest oralyzed thet BEE Gaal galice ehevltys th Lhe United lakes Lt bad occured 52 for %m Deine The pee rebed. drtelgnenber sieve, tect gee ce officer- trae? shelly deabhs pee day, wes trove Bhar Lue the vate theb te government’ Mod vecorded over the post deawde.
