Measurement Under CESMM3

Class C items

Measurement is a fundamental requirement for the evaluation of cost of proposed works

and the calculated final accounts for works completed on a project.

The items covered under Class C are forms of Geotechnical Engineering which uses the
principles of soil mechanics and rock mechanics to investigate sub-surface conditions and
materials.

Class C is a mixture of different types of works. Their only similarity is that they are all
of a specialist nature. Each type of work is will generally need its own method related
charges at least for the mobilisation of plant.

The items classified under Class C with the four main cost areas for grouting are:

1) Number of holes to be drilled

2) Length of hole to be drilled
3) Number of grout injections to be made
4) Quantity of material to be injected

It is associated that with drilling holes an injection of materials must be made, the drilling
is measured in separate items depending on the solidity of the ground conditions,
therefore this can result in one single hole requiring two items for drilling.

These items are described according to their, diameter, zone of inclination and their depth
range.

Diaphragm walls are an exceptional and complex specialist operation, the measurement is
therefore best kept simple and the details affecting design are left to the contractor eith
the four main areas of cost being:
1) Excavation for diaphragm walls
2) Concrete
3) Reinforcement
4) Guide Walls

These Diaphragm walls are constructed as a retaining wall within a slot excavated into
the ground, they are constructed by using bentonite slurry or other forms of support
liquid.

The excavation for diaphragm walls does not include additional excavation for guide
walls. If the surface for excavation is not the original then this must be stated in the item
description.

As soil is variable ground anchorages are often installed in a mixture of sands and gravels
or clays in order to strengthen the area. Within CESSM3 it is required that ground
anchorages should state the composition, location and working loads and details of water
and grouting tests and pre-grouting and grouting as additional descriptions.

Sand drains are holes drilled into a cohesive soil and filled with sand, the sand has a
larger particle size therefore its permeability is much higher resulting in water flowing
though it much easier, The method can be extremely effective and hundreds of sand
drains can be placed in a day very cheaply

The ground anchors and sand drains are covered by items for:
1) Number of anchors
2) Size of anchor/drain
3) Length
