BLANKING PROCESS

Advantages:

Excellent dimensional control, accuracy, and repeatability through a

production run.
Straight, superior finished edges to other metal stamping processes.
More economical for large production runs than traditional operations
when additional.
It is often the cheapest and most cost effective method for medium to
high volume of production.
It can create multiple shaped holes or same shaped holes very fast.

Disadvantages:

Slightly higher tooling cost when compared to traditional punching

operations.
Slightly slower than traditional punching operations.
Often needs secondary finishing operations to smooth out burrs along the
bottom edge.

ROLLING PROCESS

Advantages:

Work hardening increases strength.

Excellent surface finish.
Excellent tolerance on thickness and shape.
Can roll to a thin tolerance.
Can roll thick metals to finer tolerances.

Disadvantages:

High forces.
Small reductions give rise to surface stresses and non-uniform stress
distribution.
Takes a lot rolls to get the right thickness.
Machines might break down and take a while to get back up and running
and this can loses the company money.

TRIMMING PROCESS

Advantages:

The cycle time of thermal energy deflashing is relatively quick, which suits
mass production.
The deflashing effect is quite good.
The process allows for tighter tolerances and more intricate parts.

Disadvantages:
The burning temperature is very high and the plastic component can be
burned on all surfaces.
The appearance surface of the part will be adversely affected, so this
method cant be used for parts with a high-quality surface requirement.
Since the design and mold tends to be complex, tooling can also become
expensive.

PIERCING PROCESS

Advantages:

Machines are very accurate and shapes can be formed neatly.

Metal remain flat and does not bend in the process.
Detail can be added and punch shape can be changed.

Disadvantages:

Machines are very large in size and take up a lot of space in a factory.
High set up cost for machines.
Although little waste is left from the process, the machines are bad for the
environment as they are powered and require a lot of energy to work
efficiently.

BENDING PROCESS

Advantages:

Ability to achieve negative angles.

Bending tonnage is minimal.
Parts are easy to manufacture.
The fork is more beautiful and easy to use.

Disadvantages:

Parts must be rotated.

It is more difficult to adjust for over bends.
The bend radius is not perfectly true on the finished product.

POLISHING PROCESS

Advantages:

Gives a natural appearance with a high gloss and sheen.

Produces a relatively durable finish.
Never requires stripping.
Can be applied with a standard low speed weighted floor machine.
Save to use and beautiful.

Disadvantages:

A messy process, requiring additional work to clean up.

If oxalic acid is included in the powder, it can cause etching or blistering of
marble and limestone depending on the skill of the person using it.
Requires equipment (i.e., a floor machine, wet vac, mop, mop bucket,
etc.).
Require high experience.
PLATING PROCESS

Advantages:

Beautiful and prevent the effect of metal taste.

Higher cathode efficiency and better throwing power.
Less energy is required because of the lower current densities required.
The process is more robust than hexavalent chromium because it can
withstand current interruptions.

Disadvantages:

Must use the appropriate temperature.

Waste time.
The process must be controlled more closely than in hexavalent chromium
plating, especially with respect to metallic impurities.
The corrosion resistance of thicker coatings is not quite as good as it is
with hexavalent chromium.
CONCLUSION

The fork was very important in Germany because they believed eating with your
fingers was very rude and disrespectful. The fork led to family dinners and sit-
down meals which is very important in their culture. Based on the manufacturing
process that had been listed which is start with blanking, rolling, trimming,
piercing, bending, polishing, and end with plating process. Each of the process
has their own advantages and disadvantages that made each of the process
different to another. To make perfect forks each of steps in the manufacturing
process must be consider. This is to ensure that the waste can be minimized and
the quality forks can be produce. There is much type of forks that has different
type of usage. Mostly the fork is used in handle food. Some of them are, beef
fork which is used for picking up meat. This fork is shaped like a regular fork, but
it is slightly bigger and the tines are curved outward. The curves are used for
piercing the thin sliced beef. Besides, crab fork which is short, sharp and narrow
three-pronged or two-pronged fork designed to easily extract meat when
consuming cooked crab. Lastly, dessert fork designed to eat desserts, such as a
pastry fork. They usually have only three times and are smaller than standard
dinner forks. The leftmost tine may be widened so as to provide an edge with
which to cut (though it is never sharpened). The objective in this project that
studies the manufacturing process of a fork is achieved.

For recommendations, the manufacturing process can be more specific

and details. This is for information to the user must know about the thing that
they used every times and for the dealer that want to buy the fork. They also
need to know about the process either follow their criteria and quality that they
need since the process also play roles in the quality improving. Second, the
recommendation is for the designer of the fork. They should consider the safety
in using fork. The design must be suitable for the user especially for the children.
The size also has to fit with the user to avoid any injuries. Next, the project in this
subject has to be continued for other students because they can improve they
skills in investigate and analysis in manufacturing process which can be applied
when they work in the industrial field. This knowledge can be used by student
especially when in design and manufacturing department when working. Last but
not least, The University should proceed final project in this subject in order to
test the capabilities and abilities of students in the review process used to
produce the goods. Guidance from time to time should be done so that students
are able to produce quality work and provide benefits to their own future.
