Totem Pole Activity

This activity requires you to integrate your understanding of the various elements of
totem poles which were (and still are) created by the Native Americans of the Pacific
Northwest. For this activity you will need to think about your family and your story.

Required Steps:

1. Reference Sheet- Examine the reference sheet of symbols and colors associated
with the various animals that were used on totem poles. (DO NOT WRITE ON THIS)

2. Select Animals- at least 4 to represent your family, friends, pets, etc.

3. Begin sketching -your totem pole with your chosen images. (see examples)

4. Choose Colors- symbolic colors to include as well (see sheet)

5. Artists Statement- Write an artists statement describing your art/symbols and why
you choose those elements. (see examples)

6. Final Draft Paper- Lastly, check in with your teacher and finalize your totem pole
drawing; you will receive final paper.
