Of all difficulties nothing is more difficult th

We find in the
Kygyshinsh
Chapter on True Practice, many passages quoted as evidence
to show the supreme merit and efficacy of the Nembutsu. One of them,
from Tao
-
ch'o's
Collection of Passages Concern
ing Birth in the Land of Peace and Bliss,
has this to say:
S kyamuni
advised his fa
ther the King to practice the N
embutsu Samadhi. The King
asked the Bud
dha, 'Why do you not recommend the practice of realizing directly the
Buddha's virtue, True Such
ness or the highest principle of voidness?' Th
e Buddha
replied, 'The Buddhas' virtue of Enlighten
ment contains immeasurable and subtle
realms of realization accompanied by various supernatural powers and kn
owledge of
emancipation, which are not objects of perception for an unenlightened per
son. For
this
reason, I recommend to you, my father the King, the Nembutsu Sam
dhi.
Idealist Buddhists may try to enter straightway into the heart of the Buddhas' E
nlightenment,
but their limited capacities and evil passions inevitably create an ir
on bar
rier which defies
their penetration. The Nembutsu Sa
m
adhi comes from Amida's H
eart and reaches each one of
those who humbly respond to his Call. The Nembutsu Samadhi is not only practicab
le, but is
the most efficacious of all sam
