TRASH RAKES

TRASH RAKES
Trash Rakes are heavy duty raking devices used to remove extremely heavy debris and are usually
found upstream of the pump station or Traveling Water Screen. Trash Rakes are typically supplied as a
stationary unit or as a traversing unit that serves more than one bay. Typically Trash Rakes are the first
line of defense in an intake structure. They are also known as Bar Screens. These rakes are suitable for
dealing with large amounts of debris, such as trash, limbs, logs and weeds.

Trash Rakes have a high throughput; they are very reliable and require very little maintenance.
This rugged design has proven to handle thick debris that can clog or block other water intake equipment.

Materials of Construction: Carbon Steel, Hot Dipped Galvanized, Stainless Steel, some components
can be non-metallic composites.

TRASH RAKES

Trash Rakes main function is to prevent large pieces of debris from reaching the intake, which reduces the
chances of damage and downtime for other equipment.

SSIFACILITY

SSIoperates out of a state-of-the-art production

facility. At the heart of our plant is a massive 700 by 60

building where we build and repair water intake equipment

in an assembly line fashion. Beginning at one end, all parts

are blasted in our steel shot booth then moved down the

line to the next station. At the far end, our paint booth puts

the finishing touches on all parts and assembled traveling

water screens before final shipment. We also have our own

fiberglass fabrication shop where all fiberglass housings

and non-metallic baskets are made.

Our highly skilled staff is on call twenty-four hours a day

seven days a week, to provide the most comprehensive

service in the raw water intake system industry. For more

Once the main frame and sub assemblies have been

rebuilt, the entire traveling water screen and all of its

parts are coated with an immersion-service-rated epoxy

paint. The traveling water screen is then reassembled

and test run before being returned. Reassembled traveling water screens are carefully
checked and test run before being returned for
reinstallation.

INTAKE SYSTEMS

Your SSI team can help you choose the best options available for your water intake
system.

SCREEN STYLE - Dual-flow or thru-flow.

THRU-FLOW FRAME CONSTRUCTION comes in 2-post or 4-post; with or without backup beam.

FRAME MATERIALS: Carbon steel, 304L stainless steel or 316L stainless steel. Other exotic materials
are also available.

BASKET CONSTRUCTION can be formed carbon steel, any type of stainless steel, or nonmetallic. Each
can be fitted with leaf rakes, lifting lips, or fish-handling buckets.

WIRE MESH paneling can be 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel, copper, hot dipped galvanized, or
plastic. All standard wire gauge sizes and materials can be specified, with various size square and vertical
slot openings.

SPRAY WASH PIPES AND NOZZLES - The spray wash system can be built with single or multiple header
pipes in a variety of materials including: carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, or PVC. In addition, SSI
carries a large selection of spray nozzles in different styles and alloys to best suit your water conditions.

MOTOR/REDUCER ASSEMBLY - Single speed, two speed, or variable speed motors with reducers can be
specified in different voltages.

HEAD AND FOOT SPROCKETS - fabricated or cast sprockets can be supplied in cast iron, carbon steel,
304 stainless steel or 316 stainless steel.

CARRIER CHAIN - lubricated or maintenance-free, non-lubricated pins can be specified for a variety
of options of carrier chain which includes: carbon steel, 416 stainless steel, 304 stainless steel, 316
stainless steel, 17-4 pH stainless steel or specified alloy materials for all round parts. Chain sidebars are
available in carbon steel, 304 stainless steel, 316 stainless steel and 17-4 pH stainless steel.

CHAIN TENSIONING OPTIONS - The standard take-up system, equipped with rod, capstan and thrust
bearing, requires manual adjustment The spring suspension system is built to maintain the necessary
tension to keep carrier loops operating effectively and requires minimal adjustment.

TAKE-UP BEARINGS - the head shaft bearing housings are available with bronze bushings or with anti-
friction roller bearings.

FOOTSHAFT BUSHINGS - Standard footshaft and foot sprocket bushings and bearings are made of
bronze. However, due to the difficulty of maintaining boot section components underwater, SSI highly
recommends that these bushings and sleeves be manufactured out of a superior cobalt/nickel alloy called
Stoody.

COATINGS - The standard coating for a carbon steel traveling water screen frame and its components
is a two part epoxy rated for immersion service. Also available are coatings designed for specific tasks,
such as inhibiting marine growth (e.g. zebra mussels) or providing better protection in waters laden with
chlorides or other corrosive elements. Your SSI sales representative can help you select the best coating
for your application.
FISH HANDLING TRAVELING WATER SCREENS

Section 316B of the Federal Water Pollution Center Act

has required that some traveling water screen users

implement fish handling devices. These devices

minimize the adverse environmental impact on marine

life that come in contact with traveling water screens.

All traveling water screens can be upgraded to fish

handling designs. SSI has several engineered design

modifications that significantly reduce adverse

environmental effects to marine life.

The basic components to be considered are:

Baskets with fine or vertical slot mesh and fish

buckets/pans.

Additional low pressure discharge spray headers.

Additional above-grade return troughs.

New splash housings and housing extensions.

RISTROPH FISH BASKET
Upgraded drive assemblies for continuous running to

limit fish impingement.

FISH SURVIVAL DESIGN - Where EPA regulations dictate,

your traveling water screen may be fitted to the special

baskets, spray wash headers and troughs to help assure

the survival of marine life.

DUAL FLOW FISH HANDLING TRAVELING WATER SCREEN
Positioned perpendicular to water flow utilizing ascending baskets for screening area.

Designed and engineered to eliminate debris carryover.

Equipped with fewer moving parts below the floor line for reduced maintenance and greater reliability.
Designed to meet the requirements of 316 (b) fish survival impingement rates.
