Simmons College Finally Sees an Increase in Minority Enrollment

BOSTON-- This year the college has seen an 8.7 percent increase from the year before whereas the year
before was only a one percent increase. This includes increases in the enrollment of black, American
Indian, Asian, and Hispanic students. Five years ago minority enrollment was 1,540 students. Today it is
1,899 students of the 24,500 students currently enrolled.

The university has taken a significant step forward, said Simmons College President Helen Drinan.
Our efforts of recent years are beginning to produce the desired results.

The increase in minority students is a gratifying sight for many students, faculty, and administrators
who have worked for it, Drinan said. We will have more to do. This is only the beginning.

Simmons College is seeing the following increases:

Black students increased by 34 to a total of 678

American Indian increase of 46 to a total of 204
Asian increase by 44 to a total of 565
Hispanic increase by 28 to a total of 452
