Iodine deficiency in the body can lead to a number of diseases.

Goitre, endemic goitre,

cretinism to name a few. The question is how can we protect us and our family from
these disorders?

Iodine derivatives added to edible salt is your answer. You dont have to remember
taking separate Iodine supplements because once it is in your salt, its consumption is
unavoidable.

Although Iodine is present in many of the food items we intake in our daily life, like
cheese, cow milk, yoghurt, it depends on the region, the brand, the batch on its amount
of Iodine. Iodine deficiency can still occur if the food we consume has Iodine but it is not
the sufficient amount. Our body does not produce any iodine and we solely depend on
the food we eat to have sufficient Iodine in our body.

Iodine deficiency is usually diagnosed not for individuals but across population because it depends
on regional diet. We can however prevent it by using Iodine
rich edible salt or choosing multi-vitamins which has iodine in
it.
There is no diagnostic test to confirm Iodine deficiency in the
body. It gets evident when the symptom is much more
pronounced. Pregnant and breast-feeding women are advised
to consume at least 150 micrograms of Iodine in a day.

The last century has made an enormous advancement in

identifying and preventing this deficiency. World Health
Organisation has contributed hugely in its prevention.

Although Iodine deficiency poses a serious threat to the health of individuals, excess of Iodine is
also quite harmful. Individuals who suddenly increase Iodine content in their diet may develop
Hyperthyroidism which causes all the biological processes to speed up and adds to anxiety, stress,
nervousness, insomnia, heavy breathing etc.
