Brave New World Argument Essay
Brave New World: A Success or Failure?
People can only dream of their own perfect world; it has no chance of becoming a reality.
Dystopia is a world that appears to be perfect, but there is an oppressed society. The most well
known dystopian novel writer is George Orwell; he produced the novel 1984. Another well
known author is Aldous Huxley for having written the novel Brave New World. Although Brave
New World and 1984 had a similar theme and message, the novels were published in different
years. Orwells 1984 was published in 1949; whereas, Huxleys Brave New World was published
in 1932. Brave New World follows a society that temporarily fabricates their happiness to
eliminate the pain and sorrow in their lives. The World Controllers in Brave New World sought to
perfect their world by depending on soma and the social classes; the major reason that these
ideas failed in perfecting that world is because of the few divergent people from their society.
In Brave New World, the World Controllers established different ways that their world
would be perfect. One of those ideas was the distribution of soma; its a drug that would alleviate
the pain for a temporary time. People who intake soma would be under a state of false happiness
depending on how much is taken. Soma is a customary for their society, it is not abnormal to
constantly be downing soma. You got rid of them. Yes, thats just like you. Getting rid of
everything unpleasant instead of learning to put up with it. Whether tis better in the mind to
suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles and
by opposing end them But you dont do either. Neither suffer nor oppose. You just abolish the
slings and arrows. Its too easy (Huxley 238). The World Controllers do not want their people to
confront their emotions; therefore, Huxley is making a claim that people need to be aware of
their emotions to be able to move forward and grow as an individual. The other idea is the
establishment of social classes since before people were full grown fetuses. The World State
groups their people in several social classes: Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. But
wouldnt you like to be free to be happy in some other way, Lenina? In your own way, for
example; not in everybody elses way (Huxley 91). The World State has a place called Central
London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre where they control how people are born and which
class they are going to be put in. In the centre, they also work to divide embryos up to 96 times.
This is an advantage for their society because it meant that everyone would think the same and
be doing the same tasks. Huxley is communicating that everyone should have their own free
thoughts and free will, thoughts shouldnt be controlled to ones customs. However, the World
States customs arent perfect.
The World State did not succeed in perfecting their world. The World Controllers failed
in perfecting their world. Everyone is expected to follow the same customs and behave the way
their social class expects them to. However, the divergent people input the failure of the World
Controllers attempt at perfecting their world. Whereas, if he had the smallest sense, he'd
understand that his punishment is really a reward. He's being sent to an island. That's to say, he's
being sent to a place where he'll meet the most interesting set of men and women to be found
anywhere in the world. All the people who, for one reason or another, have got too self-
consciously individual to fit into community-life. All the people who aren't satisfied with
orthodoxy, who've got independent ideas of their own (Huxley 226-227). The World State does
not want anyone to think on their own, they want people to have the same thoughts run across
everyone in their society. People have no free will on acting upon their independent thoughts or
morals. Huxley makes John as a representation of people who are different from others because
they dont act the way that is normal to them. With differences, there is conflict that will prevent
a world from being perfect if the differences arent accepted.
A dystopian world, like the World States society, does not have room to succeed. The
World States way of perfecting their world was done by normalizing the use of soma and
establishing groups of a social class; however, these ideas did not succeed in bringing them their
utopia. Huxley wrote Brave New World as a warning to future generations, similar to Orwells
reasoning for having written 1984. The novel is Huxley communicating to readers that we have
to confront our emotions and always be aware of everything that goes on around us.
