Incompatibility argument
Conclusion of the arugement is free will + Determinism cannot be true.
If we are free , determinism must be false and if determinism is true then we dont
have free will.
All these actions are on syllabus:
1. Premise one - If DET is true then every event is caused by the past laws of
nature. (def. of determinism)
2. If DET is true, then my actions are casued by past laws and physics.
(application of defention)
3. If my actions are caused by laws of nature , then I couldnt have done
otherwise in any case.
4. If actions could have been different (any action

Hum Compatabilisim
Says the problem with the above argument is that it introduces a theory of
free will.
Compatilist say free will and DET is true
I perform an action cause I want to of a desire AND if I had had a differnet
desire I would have done something else. (called coniditonal anylis of free will)
P+L -- my desires --- my actions

Main argument against free will

o Will be on the quiz!!
o 1.) if determinism is true, we have no free will. (based on the
incompatiblit argument if determinism is true, you have no choice of
action and not free) (since compatiblism doesnt work)
2.) If indeterminism is true, we have no free will. (all actions are caused
by C+L or they are random. Random actions arent free)
3.) Either determinism is true or indeterminism is true. One has to be
true or false.
4.) There is no free will (conclusion).
