1. Who has a better organizational structure GOOGLE or Microsoft? Explain.

Google has a better organizational structure, the matrix organizational
structure which can be a combination of both a functional and divisional
organizational organization because they exercise flat environment
which means that Googles employees, teams or groups can bypass middle
management and report directly to CEO and that require individuals to be
deeply motivated towards changing, failing, revising and being highly self-
disciplined. It can provide both flexibility and more balanced decision-making
as there are two chains of command instead of just one. The companys
various departments, all equal, working in tandem to produce a single final
product.

2. How do you classify Apples structure and what approach does it use in
establishing its strategy?
Apples organizational structure is a combination of both divisional and
functional organizational structure. Functional organizational structure
because the upper tier of Apples organizational structure has function-
based grouping, which is an element derived from the functional type of
organizational structure. Each senior vice president who reports to Tim
Cook handles a business function. Apples top leaders address business
needs in terms of function areas. Divisional organizational structure
because The lower tier of Apples organizational structure has product-
based grouping, which is an element derived from the divisional type of
organizational structure. Below the senior vice presidents, there are
many vice presidents for different outputs or products. It enables Apple to
address specific products or product components.

3. If you are the CEO or owner of a firm, what would be your organizations
structure and approach in establishing strategies?
There is no right or wrong way to lead. It is the ability to achieve a
balance that makes the difference. So, if I am the CEO of a company I
will choose the Matrix organizational structure where an employee
reports to both the functional as well as the project managers. S/he
reports to the functional manager for daily work functions while reporting
to the project manager on project related operational issues. For the
matrix management structure to work, both the managers need to be
given equal weight and recognition. It calls for a delicate balance of
human egos and fragilities. This structure provides faster decentralized
decisions, improved access to a diverse range of skills and perspectives
and increased communication and coordination across the business.
And I will choose the Cultural approach because in this approach the
strategic leader concentrates on establishing and communicating a clear
mission and purpose for the organization and the allowing employees to
design their own work activities with this mission which is an important
aspects in attaining success in an organization, defining first the
procedures of how you will be able to achieve it.

4. Discuss at least 3 approaches discussed in establishing/implementing of the

strategies.

The Commander Approach - The strategic leader concentrates on

formulating the strategy, applying rigorous logic and analysis. S/he is
primarily a thinker/planner rather than a doer. Manager uses power to see
strategy implemented but no personal biases should be present. Its
advantages is that managers focus on strategy formulation and it focuses on
objective rather than subjective and the disadvantage is it can reduce
employee motivation and innovation

The Cultural Approach - The strategic leader concentrates on establishing

and communicating a clear mission and purpose for the organization and the
allowing employees to design their own work activities with this mission. It
partially breaks down the barriers between management and workers since
each member of the organization can be involved to some degree in both the
formulation and implementation of the strategy. It has the advantage of more
enthusiastic implementation of strategies by all members of the company.

The Organizational Change Approach - The strategic leader again decides

major changes of strategy and the considers the appropriate changes in
structure, personnel, and information and reward systems if the strategy is to
be implemented effectively. Managers who implement this approach assume
that a good strategy has been formulated and view their task as getting the
company moving toward new goals. The tools used to accomplish this
approach are largely behavioral and include such things as changing the
organizational structure and staffing to focus attention on the organizations
new priorities, revising planning and control systems, and invoking other
organizational change techniques.
