Big Band Arranging and Score Analysis AR331

In order to receive credit by exam (CBX) for AR331, two (concert) scores (with
transposed parts), along with a CD of well-performed acoustic versions of each, must be
submitted to Eric Gould, Chair of the Jazz Composition department. NO SEQUENCES
ACCEPTED. The instrumentation will be the standard 7&5 (five saxes (AATTB), four
trumpets, three trombones, and a rhythm section of at least piano, bass, and drums). At
least one of the two arrangements must be of a standard tune. If one is based on an
original tune, include a lead sheet. The evaluation of these arrangements will focus on
the creative inclusion and application of the following techniques:
1. Proper score layout and notation.
2. Sectional unisonal writing involved in contrapuntal textures.
3. Appropriate melodic embellishment and interpretation.
4. Standard block voicings and coupling in concerted passages.
5. Supportive background writing behind soloists.
6. Available-note (chord-scale) voicings.
7. The use of woodwind doublings (in the saxophone section) to create
textural color. As an option, you may instead submit an additional one-
chorus arrangement in which the saxophonists play only woodwinds and
the brass are muted.
8. Orchestrational variety and contrast.
9. Creative control of form including the use of intros, interludes, phrase
extensions, modulations, reharmonization, and endings.
10. Successful arrangers chorus or shout chorus ideas and related
orchestration.
In addition, you may be required to take an exam. The quality of the submitted material must
be of A level work in order to receive credit by exam. Improper (or sloppy) notation,
accidental errors, and weak (poorly conceived) musical moments will disqualify the
submitted materials. Put all materials in a manila envelope with you name, ID number,
mailbox number and email address printed clearly on the front. Put it in Eric Goulds
mailbox in the Professional Writring Center. If trying to satisfy a prerequisite requirement,
the process must be completed prior to the first meeting of the class in question. Plan
accordingly.
