Seeing social change as a process of reform and adaptation in which one person does

have power is the key to my vision of a career in human services. A lot of people like to ask

themselves what they can do, as one person, to change any situation. The answer is that they can

do everything that they can and accept the challenge of being an agent of change regarding social

welfare and social progress for families and children, and for the continuing pursuit of social

justice. In terms of the growth and change, I learned in the program of study getting my

bachelors in sociology and my masters in human services administration that being involved in

human services requires a great deal of leadership and determination; leaders in the field must

ensure the success of their clients in every way possible by being effective team players who can

make definitive, goal-oriented decisions based on skills and experience. It is also important to

know that these decisions are based on a foundation of teamwork, leadership, and

communication that is vital to success. I believe that my many experiences as a leader, agent of

change, and an articulate and independent planner at Wilmington and Delaware State

Universities and in my work in corrections and the Delaware family court system, have helped to

ensure my future success in the field of human services generally. Although I have grown and

changed, I am concerned with success more than ever, and continue to set and meet my personal

and career goals in the face of challenges.

It is also important to recognize that it is not only dreams of success that bring people to

the field of human services. I believe that I have learned through my study in criminal justice

and sociology that an effective leader adheres to a vision of professionalism and integrity while

remaining responsible and productive in terms of personal and collective ethics. Through my

experience, I am a strong proponent of the belief that the individual must accept responsibility

for his/her decisions in the ways in which they affect societys dynamic both internally and

externally. I enjoy working with others, and hope to help as many families as possible. The

power of group thinking and the value of ethical imperatives are important to me; I am a logical

thinker, but also a nurturer and collaborator. I know that my education and work experience with

the court system, as well as my volunteer work with Boys and Girls Club and Wellesley College,

have prepared me for taking real steps towards my ultimate goal of becoming a human services

professional. The challenge of the future is to use my experience, skills, and education to evince

the type of leadership in which will allow me to help others as well as helping myself. . I

returned to postgraduate study when I realized that I needed further challenges to truly prepare

myself for a more fulfilling career in my field. Personally contributing in such a positive manner

in associated fields, however, has given me the framework that I needed to put my future goals

into a new focus, and I come to the challenge ahead of me with this renewed focus, bolstered by

the academic achievement that I showed during my undergraduate studies.

Step 2

The strengths guide listed my top five themes as context, connectedness, relator,

harmony, and intellection. I especially related to the findings regarding connectedness and

relationship skills, because these aspects are part of helping other people, and this goal has been

foremost in my mind throughout my educational experiences. My academic tenure thus far has

been marked by excellence and positive leadership, which bears out the intellection score. My

personal strengths are in effective preparation and mediation, which seems to reflect well on the

harmony score, and I believe that I have learned a significant amount in terms of experience and

achievement, as well as concrete skills and the ethical responsibility required of a true leader. In

my diligent study as an undergraduate and in my experience working, I have met and exceeded

many of my personal goals, while still keeping my priorities in context, which shows the high

context theme in the strengths guide. At school, I have been lauded for my academic

achievements, and was also involved in many extracurricular programs as a leader and positive

contributor. This shows a combination of intellection and being a relator. At work, I took

personal initiatives to further my development in the real world.

I also experienced growth in my role as a relator outside of the university campus during

my time as an undergrad. Working with a team of professionals as a senior correctional

counselor at Sussex in Georgetown, I quickly gained the respect of my colleagues and superiors,

who singled me out from among a number of fellow professionals for a special training program

in which I was put on a fast track and brought in to real court meetings. This opportunity was

enriching and enlightening, showed a continuance of the connection theme mentioned in the test

results, and left a lasting impression on me regarding the continuance of my goals in terms of

imperatives involving individual and collective responsibility, as well as teamwork. Along with

these personal displays of integrative leadership, my performance thus far, both academically and

in the working world, shows a pattern of success that exemplifies real growth and acumen for

social justice.

The MAPP results showed my strengths in sociability and teamwork, my focus on

planning and interaction, and my preference for tangible over esoteric tasks and results. They

also showed that I am logical, analytical and factual, although not to a fault. These results seem

to ring true when compared to my own self-image. Since becoming exposed to the human

services field through work experience and the university program, I have further dedicated

myself to being more analytical and detail oriented. My traits have not changed during my work

experience or my time spent as an undergraduate or graduate student thus far. Working in the

various areas associated with administration, social work and human services, I have found that

there are many opportunities for me to make a difference for families and children by using the

skills pointed out in the MAPP results, particularly those of sociability and the pursuit of tangible

results. I have many ideas and a sense of perspective as a result of working with clients to

achieve these results, and I plan to use my degree to set my aforementioned long-term personal

goals into practice. My academic experience, personal experience, strengths, and short-term

goals will converge in this ultimate goal and assure that I am able to continue my patterns of

success and displays of effective leadership and teamwork.

Step 4

My choice was school/career counselor; I chose this aspect of human services because

these workers can advocate for social justice while helping to invest the human capital of society.

School and career counselors help people to find new careers, transition from one career to

another, or make a move from one sector to another, such as military to civilian life. Being a

career counselor requires leadership and determination, and I believe that my combination of

leadership abilities and my dedication to service makes me attenuated to this field both

academically and professionally. Extending my roles and responsibilities, I expect to find a

similar niche in the field at large as a professional starting my own agency. I enjoy a challenge,

provided that the work is rewarding and fulfilling. Because of my I believe that my educational

and real-world experiences have given me a solid foundation upon which to build towards my

ultimate goal of starting my own agency dealing with issues of career choice in others.
