Summary and Reflection for Article 1: What Makes Effective Teachers Effective?

This article gave out 3 main factors that help in the increase of student achievement in

and out of the classroom. The three main factors are Lesson Planning, Lesson Delivery, and

Assessments.

Lesson Planning focuses primarily on what the teacher considers before teaching his/her

students. That includes content to be taught, materials to be used, activities to be done, and

questions to be asked. It has been disclosed that many of the findings state that the most effective

teachers are those who plan with others collaboratively. Also, they are multi-sourced, not

dependent on just one material and are prepared for any changes in the class.

Lesson Delivery goes hand in hand with Lesson Planning, but most of the times, teachers

change what they have planned while they are teaching. Sometimes they plan to discuss for 10

mins but because the class is rowdy, they need to adjust that to 15. Flexibility is one of the life

skills that every teacher should practice. A lot of trusted studies have pointed out that this is the

most critical factor among all three because as Cohen, Raudenbush and Ball argue that

"instructional delivery has the most immediate causal effect on student learning". This means

that this has the most effect on students. How a teacher handles his/her class will either

encourage and motivate the student or not. I think that a teacher's style in delivering her lessons

is what students look forward to. If their teachers are not enthusiastic about the lesson, then they

wouldn't be as well. But if their teacher acts positively about his/her lesson, the class will also act

positively on that.

After being able to deliver a lesson, teachers are somehow required to assess themselves

and their students as well. I think by doing this, it's not just the class that is growing more, but
also the teacher. Being open to mistakes and honestly pointing that out will help teachers do

better the next time they will teach. Assessing the student's understanding will not just also help

the student but the teacher too. If a teacher notices that majority of his/her class does not

understand the lesson, then that might mean that the class did not do a good job on that lesson

and might need to repeat it. If there is only one student who struggles then maybe that means that

is his/her weakness. Also, when a teacher consults his/her students about their progress in class,

the students are more likely to be intrinsically motivated to perform better.

Among all three, a lot of researchers suggests that lesson delivery is the most important.

Palardy and Rumberger state that instructional practices have the most proximal association

with student learning. By this they mean that lesson delivery has the greatest impact on a childs

acquisition of knowledge directly. The 2 other factors are also important, but for me, the way

teachers develop and deliver their lesson is the most important because this is the part wherein

the students are involved. It is not just the teacher with his/her team, but when delivering the

lesson, it is the teacher and the student who is working to be able to understand better the lesson

that they are talking about.
