Course Description:
9th Grade English reinforces comprehension, critical thinking and writing skills. Language arts
skills are integrated within units, connecting reading, writing, listening, and speaking/discussing.
Through reading and writing, students are encouraged to acquire awareness, share in the human
experience, and be empowered to express their own ideas.

Class Website:
We will be using Google Classroom for our class website. I will keep it up to date with
assignments and announcements. Please check it regularly.

Supplies:
1) Three ring notebook
2) Dividers
3) Pencils
4) Loose leaf paper
5) Spiral or composition notebook
6) Sticky notes
7) USB flash drive (optional - you may use Google Drive if you prefer)

Classroom Values and Expectations:

1) Respect everyone - there will be many times in this class where students will be
engaged in group discussions and sharing their personal opinions on a subject. I expect
that each one of you respect each other and me as well as the materials and authors of
those materials. As a class we will be working on strategies for respectfully disagreeing
with others.
2) Come to class on time - Tardiness is a distraction to others and may result in
extra time spent with me outside of class time. Frequent tardies will result in an office
referral.
3) Be prepared - Students are expected to come prepared with their notebooks,
paper, pencils and free reading books everyday.
4) Responsible use of hall passes - The student planner is the official CHS hall
pass. Before leaving class for any reason you must have me sign your planner and must
also carry my room pass with you while out. If you forget your planner you will be

unable to leave the classroom. Students are allowed four passes to leave my classroom
per semester. Use them wisely.
5) Respectful use of cell phones and other devices - Cell phones, tablets and laptop
computers are useful and important tools in our society and can be valuable learning
tools. Students are encouraged to bring their own device for use in the classroom.
However, students are expected to use them respectfully, appropriately and only during
times where their use is approved by me. Failure to do so may result on the loss of this
valuable privilege.
6) Food and drink - Water in clear bottles ONLY. Food will be allowed but please
refrain from eating chips and crackers that will leave residue on the materials (i.e.
Cheetos, Doritos, etc.) You are expected to clean up after yourself, failure to do so will
result in the lose of this privilege for the entire class.
7) Please review the Code of Conduct in your student planner - these
expectations will be strictly enforced

Attendance:
Class attendance is extremely important for a students understanding of the material.
Assignments will center around class discussions, lectures and readings. Students will be
responsible for knowledge of the material covered in class on the day of their absence.
Missing assignments and course material is to be picked up by the student from
the missed work folder at the front of the classroom. The assignments will be labeled
with the students name.
Absent students may have an alternative assignment to complete to make up for
any group work they may have missed.
Unexcused absences will result in 50% credit for any course work completed in
class as well as any homework assigned that day.
If an absence is excused, a student may receive full credit for completed
assignments.

Academic Dishonesty:
Honesty and integrity in writing are of vital importance both in this class and in life. I expect that
all work you produce for this course will be your own. If you use any ideas and content from
others, I expect you to document and give the source full credit. The first incidence of plagiarism
or other forms of cheating will result in a failing grade on the assignment. Subsequent incidences
will result in an office referral and a meeting with parents in addition to a failing grade on the
assignment.
