Simple harmonic motion

What is simple harmonic motion?
Essential How can we graphically model SHM of a spring?
Questions: Where in our everyday life will we see some of these
things being used?

Possible prior

What came before this?
What lessons can easily be related to things before, how can students
make connections? Overarching themes? How will it be student
centered?
Students just learned forces (angular momentum) and torques. They
could use forces and basic concepts of energy, but mostly will be using
the equations I give them and applying new knowledge

What can this lead to?

What questions might this lead to? What topics can you easily
transition to?
easily transitions right into pendulums. Which can lead also into sound
waves and the EM spectrum.
Engage
How will students be engaged? (possible lessons, videos, etc.) with
duration. What are students and teacher doing during?
Give equations for constant, period, and frequency. Talk about where
we see springs in everyday life and describe what k is in f=kL .
Model out using demonstration spring above, a graph for position vs.
time of what the mass on spring experiences. Graph on board to show
the oscillating simple harmonic motion. Use equations to find easier
calculations as a class on springs above them.

Time= 10 minutes
Lecture + practice problem

Formatives
Gauging how long the practice problem takes will be an easy formative
assessment. If it takes too long, I will know to go over it a little more.
Explore
(possible lessons, videos, etc.) with duration. What are students and
teacher doing during?
This section will be applying various situations they might see in
everyday life of SHM. (a car and a rock climber). These will be done
with partners, and some as a class. Then will be followed up with
simple lab

Time: 30 minutes

Formatives
I can gauge again by quickness of answers and listening in to
what the students are doing and talking about.
Explain
What are the key concepts you want students to be able to explain?
How will they accomplish this? How long will it take?
Together, we will go over a problem on the board all together, as we
will explain how we got the answers to the ones they did on their own.
This is all built into the powerpoint

Formatives
Elaborate
How will you extend learning? Relate to other topics? Activities for
further in-depth learning? Debates?
To extend the learning, if there is time we will start to move into the
basics of pendulum frequency and period, and relate them to the
springs.

10-20 min

Evaluate
How will students assess progress? How will teacher assess? Possible
summative evaluation if necessary. What are the key findings you want
students to discover?
I will ask them to do a final problem which will be treated as an exit
ticket. Using those, I can see how they are grasping the concepts. As
well as applying my CCC strategy.
