Activity
The objective of this lesson is to introduce the process of
organizing complex material in a fashion that will help
students address counterclaims. Students will work in groups
of three to select an article and use the Venn Diagram
template from SMART Exchange online to graph the pros
and cons of the authors beliefs. On the right side of the Venn
Diagram, students will list the positive features of the
authors beliefs, and on the left side, the student will list the
negative features of the authors beliefs. In the center of the
diagram, students will notate neutral ground factors. Students
will conduct research through credible websites or fact based
books on their chosen topic and determine his or her stance.
Alternatively, students may opt to use the Venn Diagram
template to notate similarities and differences in two
opposing articles. The grouped students will conduct a three
to five minute presentation on how their opinions were or
were not affected after the material was dissected. At the end

of the lesson, students will be able to make educated

statements and address counterclaims with the use of their
completed Venn Diagram.
