How Cement is Made

z 1. Limestone is extracted from the quarry

z 2. The limestone is then blended with other raw
materials (clay/shale/sand) and crushed

The Dry Process The Wet Process

z 3a. The raw material is z 3b. Water is added to

stored before being the crushed raw
ground to a fine powder materials
(raw meal) in the roller z 4b. The mix is ground
mill together in a mill to
z 4a. Further blending form a slurry
takes place in a silo z 5b. The slurry is stored
z 5a. The raw meal is then in basins from which it
heated up to is pumped to the upper
approximately 900 end of the kiln
degrees Celsius in the z 6b. In the kiln all water
preheater tower before evaporates and clinker
being fed into the kiln is formed
z 6a. At a temperature of
1450 degrees Celsius
the meal undergoes a
chemical reaction to
produce cement clinker

z 7. The clinker is rapidly cooled and then stored

z 8. Clinker from both processes is ground in the
cement mills where a small amount of gypsum is
added to improve the working properties of the end
product
z 9. At the end of this stage, the clinker has become
cement which is then stored in silos and loaded into
road tankers or packed into bags for dispatch
