Common Core Standards:

(1) Representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially with


sets of objects
(2) Describing shapes and space.

More learning time in Kindergarten should be devoted to number than to other topics.

Lesson Summary:

This lesson is created to set a structure for students to get a better sense and knowledge of math. Following a
lesson as a class, students will be able to comparing numbers. Students will make their own math book. The
books would allow students be creative and have fun. With candy in the books, the students will be encouraged
to do their books, since kids like colorful candies. Following the lesson as a class, students will get a better
understanding on differentiated numbers and later help for a successful assessment as learners. As a class,
students will work on lesson as a group work which will involve sharing. Sharing skills will help with the
students on supporting each other. As a class, students will read their math books with their parents.

Estimated Duration:

Five 50 minute class periods.

Commentary:

To begin the lesson, we will do a creative assignment to help give a better understanding on previous math
lessons and adding it with a storyline by using candy and numbers. To encourage the students, I will give a
quick summary and ask them to give their own summaries and have them write it on white smart board for the
class. They get the opportunity to share math stories. I will ask them how does math connected your everyday
life. I will let a conversation transition and begin a talk about how math is important to life. This activity will
help start the following lesson.
Instructional Procedures: (This will be one of the most detailed sections of this assignment).

Day 1:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will gather the items they will use on activity. Students will
get the chance to talk to students around them and talk about the project and share some ideas with one
another.
20 minutes: I will ask students to summarize or brainstorm stories, words and pictures of what was learned
from adding and subtracting. Students will get the chance to get up and write or draw on the white board.
Last 20 minutes: After class brainstorm, students will now begin a rough draft on what they want to write and
draw about.
At the end: Clean up and organize classroom

Day 2:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will bring out their rough drafts and begin on their rough
draft. Also talk to fellow classmates about the projects. There are computers, construction paper, glue, crayons,
pencils, and sticks available.
20 minutes: I will answer any question. Students will continue with the assignment.
Last 20 minutes: Students will be given the opportunity to work on games online to help them explore for
some creativity.
After 50 minutes on working on activity: Student and teacher meetings on discussing the activing and answer
questions. After the meeting, I will reward the students for a good start with passing out candy to each student.
At the end: Clean up and organize classroom

Day 3:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will bring out their materials and brainstorm more ideas for
their books.
20 minutes: I will answer questions and walk around to see progress from students. Students will be given
partners and share with fellow students on their progress and give each other cool ideas.
Last 20 minutes: Students will continue on working on their books. Finally, this is when each student is given
colorful candy to use for their math story.
After 50 minutes working on activity- Clean up together and organize classroom

Day 4:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will bring out their material and continue on project.
20 minutes: I will answer any questions and walk around to see the progress. Students will be given more
materials if needed. Student will continue working on project.
Last 20 minutes: Students will be given a new partner and present each others projects.
After 50 minutes working on activity: Student and teacher meeting on seeing progress, meeting standards,
understanding activities.
At the end: Clean up together and organize classroom

Day 5:
First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- Students will continue and finish their project.
20 minutes: I will answer questions. Students will gather to do a self-evaluation and continue to finish project.
Last 20 minutes: Students will figure out what they are missing and continue finishing. Then putting last
touches to project.
Collect activities and figure out if students need more time to finish the activity. This is when parents are
scheduled to come in for a conference with their child and learn from them.

Pre-Assessment:
Prior to learning the math lesson, teacher and student will engage in a class meeting. Teacher will go over the
math concepts and objective and ask questions regarding the lesson. As the students participate on answering
the questions, summarize the concepts and answer objectives.

Scoring Guidelines:
Teacher will use his/her own set of objectives and the updated kindergarten standards to determine whether
students meet and learned the objectives and content.
During the book activity on Day 2 and 4, the teacher will meet with each student to access their work and
communicate. After the meetings, teachers will be able to get an idea which students need more help and more
time.

Post-Assessment:
The personal creative projects will give the teacher of how students individually understand the objectives. In
addition, students will participate in a written and teacher follow-up math assessment to determine how well
student meet the standards and understand the lesson. The assessment will be divided in sections based on
differentiating, understanding, support, and creativity. The questions will be based on the objectives learned
which include pictures, numbers, communication and identifying what was being taught.

Scoring Guidelines:
If student scores 70% or higher in one standard (missing 3 questions), they meet their standards. Students who
miss 4 questions will have to revisit problems with teacher instructions. Students who miss more than 4
questions will have to revisit problems with teacher instructions and given helpful materials till standards are
meet and receive one-on-one help to gain understanding and meet the standards.

Differentiated Instructional Support


Students that might be struggling with math will be constructed by other students in their class. If a student
struggles continuously with the math objectives and does not meet the content in the post assessment, they will
visit the content with teacher and practice at home vie online activities, paper exercises and parent activities
with child. The goal is the child can meet the standards.
Students who have succeeded and meet their standards can further their knowledge by incorporated their skills
to more difficult problems. For example, student learned adding and subtracting numbers, but the student must
also know to find numbers by scrabbling the numbers and explain how they found the answer.

Since it is kindergarten, the parents would benefit from reading to learn more about the objectives of
kindergarten math. This would later benefit the kindergarten student because the parents would be more
connected and support their child. The parent knows more about their child than teachers. This website gives
parents the opportunity to better the child.

Homework Options and Home Connections


The work that will be assigned to students outside of the classroom will involve counting surrounds. For
example, going out the playground and counting the trees with parents. I could make these homework
activities technology-based by having the parents and kids play online games. The parents would learn more
about the kids lessons and the kids get learn and teach their parents.

When it comes to homework, age is nothing but a number. As a parent it is important to be there for kids and
help learn. Learning can happen in the grocery shop, the kitchen or even the laundry room. Id encourage
parents to be more involved and with the start of involvement at home in learning the skills addressed in the
lesson. Kids can count the items needed from the grocery shopping listen, count the dishes when setting up the
dinner table and counting the colored shirted that need ironed. Kids get the opportunity to be with parents as
well as learning at the same time.

Interdisciplinary Connections
During this lesson, students are using their creativity skills to think and build math problems that come to
mind. The book would be awesome creative project since it has color candies and self-made stories and
sharing with others.

Students are using their own skills for designing and writing personal stories while using math.

Students are using social skills by working with other students, teachers, and parents. This activity allows
students to be aware of others and connecting with others. Students have the opportunity to create and reflect
with their experience write their books with only drawing, math and candy.
