Math in Class

Ms. Walbom
Second Grade/Mathematics

Common Core Standards:

MP.1- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- Students are learning how to figure out problems on their own. Asking themselves, “Does this make
sense?” Working to find the answer.
MP.2- Reason abstractly and quantitatively
- students learn to use situations by putting tasks into numbers and symbols.
MP.3- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
- Learn how to use many different skills. Students work together to find the correct answer by learning
from each other.
MP.4-Model with Mathematics
- Learn how to use real-life mathematical situations with an equation to see if their equation matches
up with the problem context.

Lesson Summary:
This lesson is designed to help students work individually and together to find the correct work. Students will
learn skills on how to critique the way they learn and how their classmates learn. They will grow themselves
and help their classmates by working together to find the correct math problem. Students will learn how to
read a word problem and set up the equation to solve the problem. They will learn to make sure their real-
life mathematical situations make an equation that goes with the problem context.
Estimated Duration:
Five 45 minute class periods
Commentary:
To start learning this lesson I will start off with simple math equations to get them warmed up into the
lesson. To get them interested and excited for this lesson I will make fun activities and equations that relate
to them so they are drawn into what they are learning about. Learning a new topic can be challenging, but
making it exciting can help the students learn better. The students will learn how to solve equations by using
many different objects like, looking at pictures, objects, patterns, etc.

Instructional Procedures:

Day 1: As we go into learning a new topic at the beginning of the class I will ask them what they know about
the topic and what they want to learn from it. I will start off by giving them simple equations where they can
ask themselves how to solve the problem. By doing this I can see who works well independently and can
preserve. I can also see where each student is in the subject. After this, I will keep increasing the equations to
a harder problem to challenge each student to solve it on their own. I will be going around seeing if they need
help but asking questions to them to teach them how to solve it independently.
Day 2 and 3: We will learn how to work with numbers and symbols from a word problem and put them into
an equation. They will take the situation and put it into an equation. We will do small activities that will draw
the students attention, making a competition out of it. The students will learn how to create an equation by
reading the problem.
Day 4: We will go over what we learned the day before by starting off the class. We will review how to write
an equation from a situation. After we review, we will start diving in on how to use and look at different tools
that can help us solve different types of equations. We will be looking at pictures, drawings, patterns that will
help us. After that I will split the class up in groups and they will learn from each other on how to solve
equations. They will have a chance to critique other students and teach them the correct way in a respectful
manner. This will give them the chance not to learn just from me but their classmates and help them.

Pre-Assessment:
I will remind my students what they learned the year before about math. Like, addition, subtraction, word-
problems, etc. To ease the students what they will be learning in second grade math.

Scoring Guidelines:
I will be watching each student each day to know what skills they need to work on and what they know. On
the first day as the students work independently, I will get the chance to learn where each student is at on
their knowledge in math. This will give me an idea of where each student is at.

Post-Assessment:
The Assessment will have 4 questions of addition and subtraction problems. Then, 6 of the questions will be
word problems that the students have to create an equation to solve the situation.

Scoring Guidelines:
If the students score an 70% (missing only 3 questions) they have mastered the concept. The students who
missed more than 3 questions will meet with me during independent time in class so they can understand the
material better.

Differentiated Instructional Support

If a student struggles with this lesson, creating equations from word problems. That student and I will go over
it in an independent time in class, or a different time during the school day. We will keep revisiting it until
that student can prove to me they understand it. I would also send home some extra work with that student
so them and their guardian can work on it together.

- This is a good website to have the students learn more about numbers and symbols to create an
equation.

Homework Options and Home Connections

The students will come home with a packet(1-2 pages) on Friday with what we were learning in class that
week and are required to finish it and bring it back on Monday.

Interdisciplinary Connections
- Reading
-Students are reading each word problem that they need to solve.
-Art
-Students look and create pictures, drawing and patterns.
