CE 16 Computational Laboratory 8 (Siphon, Types of Pipe Flow Problems)

General instruction: Solve INDIVIDUALLY each problem to the best of your knowledge. Write your
complete solution in a clean sheet of yellow pad. The deadline of this computational lab is tomorrow
before the start of lecture.

Problem 1:

Whiskey (SG = 0.6 and = 5.0 x 10-7 m2/s) is drawn to a tank

through a hose of inside diameter of 25 mm as shown in the
figure. The relative roughness of the hose is 0.0002. Calculate the
volumetric flow rate and the minimum gage pressure in the hose.
The total length of the hose is 9 m and the length of hose to point
A is 3.25 m. Neglect minor losses at head entrance.

Problem 2:

An engineer is making an estimate of hydroelectric power for a rich home owner. This home owner has
a small stream discharging at a constant rate of 100 L/s. The owner is proposing to divert water from the
stream and operate a water turbine connected to an electric generator to supply electrical power to the
residence. The maximum head loss in the 40 m-long penstock (a conduit that supplies water to a
turbine) is 3 m. If the penstock is to be fabricated from commercial grade, plastic pipe, find the
minimum diameter that can be used. The pipes available in the market are of multiples of 25 mm (25
mm, 50 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, etc.). Use a value of 1.02 x 10-6 m2/s for the kinematic viscosity of water
and neglect minor losses.
