SUBDECT: Trip Report, 18-28 Soptenber 1980 (U)
1. (U) Fron 20 to 28 Septenber 1980, the undersigned attended a training
seminar et the. Monroe Institute of Applied Sciences (MIAS), P.0. Box 946,
Faber, VA 22938, The seninar vas conducted at the NIAS Intemational, Training
‘and Conference Center (ITCCL The LTCC ie located on a plateau in the foothills
of Virginia's scenic Blue Ridgo. The site vas selected by MIAS because it not
the basic requirenent of = tranquil pastoral environment ‘conducive to physical
‘nd mentsl relaxation, a major factor in the successful process of an intense
learning or cogitative experience.
2. (U) MIAS offers training in relaxation and concentration methodology. The
‘goal of this training is to teach individuals sclf-contzol of their oun physical
‘ond mente} activity. It vas thought that such an ability of self-control might
be of benefit to the INSCOM Grill Flene Project (IGFP). the purpose of this
trip was to assess the applicability of the MIAS training to IGF.
3. (U) During the eight day training seminar, Fifty separate relaxation/
Concentration exercises wore conducted. Each of these exerciscs lasted From
50-60 minutes, and were Followed by lengthy diacuesion periods. The exercises
vere progressive in that in the beginning they were quite oinple, and a3 the
Progran continued the exercises becane more difficult, requiring wore end more
Physical relaxation and mantel concentration. The training exercises consist
of woll established techniques of progressive relaxation, breathing exercises
‘and guided imagery. The majority of training oxereises are done lying in a
‘soundproof booth while Listening, vie eterea headphones, to surf sounds
combined with a beat frequency ogcillation of tonoa at four hertz, The’ theory
4s that the sounds vill provide a frequency folloving responce pattern conducive
‘to intense concentration and hemispheric ayncronization. Once the deoired otate
of reloxation/concentration has been experienced several tines under these
conditions, it con be regained without the aid of the training environsent ,
‘mich Like the vell-knoun biofeedback training effect, In fact, as the training
seminar progressed, several exerciges were conducted vithout the conducive
training environment, simply sitting in the conference room at the ITCC.
4, (S/NOFORN) OF particular interest to IGFP are those exercises on @ level
of concentration which MIAS cello Focus 10, It i at this level that Renote
Viowing is enhanced. Additionally, MIAS personnel believe that vhen an
out-of body state occurs from Focus 10, the aut-of-bady experience will occur
in reel vorld epace/tine and not be sutrealietic in nature,

Wheel in the level called Focus 15. Through the use of the Time Wheel. one can
