5 April 2016
On Tuesday April 5th, the Caroline County Board of Education held their monthly board
meeting. The meeting began at 7pm, and I arrived around 6:45 but I should have arrived at an
earlier time because the meeting was packed. For the first hour of the meeting I had to stand and
the lobby and listen because there were no available seats. Due to the fact that there were so
many people, I wasnt able to grab any of the pamphlets they had for the night.
As usual the meeting began by stating the Pledge of Allegiance, which was led by some
of the students from Denton Elementary School. The first thing the Board mentioned was the
event that happened in Thursday March 10th, when there was believed to be a hostage situation in
a community housing located near Lockerman Middle School. The Sheriffs Department notified
the schools that would be effected by the situation (Denton Elementary, Lockerman Middle, and
North Caroline). Students that lived in the area surrounding the scene could not ride the bus
home and had to be picked up from school. The BOE wanted to recognize the Sheriffs
Department and schools principals for a job well done and making sure everything ran smoothly
while law enforcements handled the situation. After everybody had been recognized, a
representative (whom I couldnt get a view of because of where I was standing) talked about the
highlights of the month for the schools. Some of these highlights included leadership conferences
(FBLA), PARCC testing dates, school field trips, school dances, and other things that would be
occurring during the month of April. Next, awards were given out to students who were involved
in the unified sports programs. Afterwards, the all shore band and chorus members were
recognized. Going back to the leadership conferences, members of FBLA were recognized for
their placements in the previous conference they attended. The last person the Board recognized
After the recess, the main focus of the meeting was introduced. Greensboro Elementary
School will be undergoing a major renovation to expand the school due to overcrowding. It was
reported the school is already at 113% of its capacity, and North Caroline High School will be at
106% capacity within the next 10 years. A committee interviewed four contractors, and the
School Board approved the contract with Hord Coplan Macht. The firm will be receiving
