I- Would have + participle Complete using the verb given:

(If [Present] + [will] = conditional something that
can happen)
If I had the money, I would buy a new car.
(If [Past] + [would] = conditional imaginary
situation)
If I had known you were going to apply to be an
exchange student, I would have applied to.
If [Past Perfect] + [would have + participle] =
conditional = hypothetical situation in the past
1- If I had heard the telephone ringing, I wouldve gotten it.
(to hear)
2- Id tell him the truth if he asked me. (to ask)
3- If you dont pay attention, you wont do well on the text
next week. (not / to pay)
4- Would you go with me to Miami if the boss gave you the
day off? (to give)
5- You wouldnt have slept during the meeting if you had
gone to bed earlier yesterday. (to go)
6- Would Karen notice I got home late if she were awake?
(to notice)

II- Could have / Might have + participle
We use could/might have + participle to talk about a
possibility in the past that didnt happen:
I could have (couldve) gone to the beach since I
didnt have to work.
I might have (mightve) gone to the beach since I
didnt have to work.
III- Should have + participle
We use should have + participle to talk about an action
that was advisable in the past was not performed.
I think you should have (shouldve) told the truth.
IV- Wish
We use wish + Past to express a wish about the
present:
I wish they spoke the same English in England as we
do in America. (but they dont)
We use were for all persons for the verb to be:
I wish Mom were here now. (but she isnt)
We use wish + Past Perfect to express we wanted a
past situation in the past was different:
I wish I hadnt gone so late to bed yesterday. (but I
had)
7- Do you think I would have gotten it right if the teacher
had asked me the same question he asked you? (to get)
Complete in a logical way to describe a possibility in the
past:
1- Since I had the day off yesterday, I _______________.
2- The Browns ______________________ because it was
a beautiful sunny day.
3- Since it was raining, Sarah ______________________.

6- If the police officer had noticed you were doing 75 in a

Express something that was advisable in the past:
1- Henry smoked for ten years and now he has lung problems.
He shouldnt have smoked for so long.
2- Mary went to bed after midnight yesterday and now shes
too tired to work.
She should have gone to bed earlier.
3- Tom speeded and had a car accident.
He shouldnt have speeded.

Express a wish about the past or the present:

1- Your best friend is not here to help you in a difficult situation.
I wish s/he were here.
2- Your car broke down and you forgot to pay the insurance policy this month.
I wish I had paid the insurance policy this month.
3- Your mother-in-law came over for lunch and you didnt straighten up the house.
I wish I had straightened up the house.
4- Its raining a lot and you dont have an umbrella.
I wish I had an umbrella.
5- You lost a promotion because you didnt get a university degree.
I wish I had gotten a university degree.
6- Youre spending a week at the beach but cant wear a bikini because youre too heavy.
I wish I had lost weight before coming here.
7- You forgot to fill the tank and now you are out of gas in the middle of nowhere.
I wish I had filled the tank.
