Student Accomplishment Reflection

My artifact is my marching band uniform. The uniform is white with black and gold

accents and it is one of two uniforms that are to be worn only by the drum majors of the

marching band. The drum major is the main leader of the band and ensures a certain level of

discipline and organization while also enforcing rules and physically leading the band. My

uniform represents my experience and my leadership in my marching band.

As drum major, I have been able to communicate effectively with all of my band

members to ensure that we get work done at practice. Over the summer I helped organize

practice sessions for the drumline while leaving other leaders in charge during my absence.

Through my leadership I have helped band members understand the importance of respect and

discipline while also providing a place for people to do something fun.

The SLOs I have met mostly come from willing collaborators. I set schedules for practice

over the summer with other leaders in the marching band. Using technology, I have been able to

communicate with not only the leaders of the marching band, but also the leaders of our schools

colorguard. I was also a judge for drumline tryouts before the end of last school year. During

those tryouts, myself and another marching band leader assigned positions based on the strengths

of the people who tried out.

From my experience as Drum Major I have gained confidence that I didnt know I had

previously. I have also learned to be a better communicator with other people with authority and

collaboration has led to better performance. I learned that as long as I present myself as

confident, people will take me seriously, despite any insecurities that I might have had. If I could

improve in any way, it would be by increasing how strict I am when it comes to enforcing rules.

This artifact will help me with my future as I have further developed my leadership skills after
my experience. I can take these skills and better the way I hold myself up in front of large groups

of people.
