Analysis Artifact Reflection

For this assignment, my peers and I were instructed to complete a timed-writing on a

poem called Love by George Herbert. This artifact came from my AP English Literature class

and it was completing in class. The prompt of this essay was to show how the poem was an

example of a metaphysical poem. I accomplished this by using a three-pronged structure in

which I used the of the traits commonly associated with metaphysical poetry: an argumentative

structure, biblical allusions, and a thought-inducing style of writing. My grade for this

assignment was a score of 90 out of 90.

This artifact was an example of an Analysis Artifact. This essay fits this category because

of the process of analyzing the text that I went through while reading it to come up with

connections. For example, I was able to analyze the short poem, and draw from its text that there

were two characters that were arguing with each other, which is one way that this poem fits into

the metaphysical category. My analyzation of the text allowed for me to explain my stance on

the poem.

The Student Learning Outcome that this artifact meets was that of Critical Thinker. Was

able to effectively come to conclusions about what the texts deeper meaning was by thinking

critically about what the author was trying to say about his character. One conclusion I came to

while analyzing the text was that the author put an emphasis on love meaning loving ones

self. The character in the story known as Love was trying to tell the man that he should be able

to love himself and that it might be a spiritual journey. I was able to come to this conclusion

because I thought critically about what the author was trying to say about love.
What I learned about myself when I completed this artifact was that I am actually very

capable of understanding the deeper meaning of stories. I previously believed that I was simply

not good at finding storys meanings, but getting a score of 90 on this paper made me feel

confident in my ability to do so. I now understand that to find the meanings of stories I only need

to focus and relate the words of the author to something that might be an overarching theme. I

will take this skill with me to college and do my best to analyze texts and provide a clear and

descriptive response to essay prompts.
