Solaiman Miah, BIT Executive Committee member were also present in the seminar. Mr. Abdullah Al Amin, Assistant Director of BIIT expressed his gratefulness to Allah (SWI) for making the seminar possible. He thanked the Honor- able Guests and the participants for their presence in the seminar. M Abdul Aziz, Executive Director of Bangladesh Institute of Islamic Thought (BHT) was the keynote speaker in the seminar, Prof Dr Abdur Rahman Anwari, Vice President (Research) of BIIT, presided over the seminar, where Prof Dr M Azizur Rahman, Vice Chancellor of Uttara Univer- sity and Dr, Shamsuddin Ahmed, Visiting Professor of Mechanical and Chemical Engineering, Islamic University of Technology (IUT) Bangladesh were also present as special guests. While providing an historical over- view of higher education, M Abdul Aziz. asserted, the fundamental aspect in the curriculum of the University of Paris (the European university established in the 12! century) was theology and this model had been emulated by the ‘Oxford and Cambridge universi- ties in England, as well as Harvard College, in Boston, USA. He found, the foundation of curricu- lum at Harvard University (the oldest educational institution in the United States), since its formation in the 18" century was theological. He focused on how religious thought has been shifted to rational and economic thought as eduea- tional goals, He mentioned three challenges facing Muslim higher educational institutions: (j). Euro-centric ‘education system instead of philo- sophical goal of education (ii. Competetion of university rank- ings criteria set by the West and (Gil). Most importantly, seculariza- tion and dualism in education instead of focusing on religion, belief systems or revealed knowl- ‘edge that came from Allah (SWT) Just mentioning few contemporary Islamic models of higher educa- tion, Mr. M Abdul Aziz who is currently a PhD Fellow, Kulliyy- aah of Education, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) proposed another model of higher education named Integrated Model of Higher Education which is under research. Following Mr. Aziz’s lecture, there was a Question and Answer session in which the audience had the opportunity to share their ‘thoughts with him, asked hi relevant queries and sought clar cation regarding his views. ‘The seminar ended with a vote of thanks to and from the chair. ‘Seminar on Political Economy of MDGs... DSS IOD TUDO DT SSO TS TU TOE TOO UNO SU OTT ISO UTE (3 DUNTGOON Following the welcoming remarks, Dr Moniruzzaman, at the very beginning of his lecture, described Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a noble initiative to achieve eight major goals adopted by the UN in the 1990s to be achieved during 2000-2015. He then stated that this noble initiative deserves critical assessment of achievement and strategies as its time frame is approaching to an end. Dr. Sadeq in his discussion expressed a great doubt in having any specific plan of the govt. to fulfill the MDGs in targeted time along with yearly plan, five years pan and so on. Dr. Masum stated that out of 8 goals of MDGs, there are no prob- lems in the first 7 goals. The prob- Jem is with the last one, i.c. in developing a global partnership for development, Shah Abdul Hannan in his speech said that all the goals of MDGs are important, not contradictory with- Islam. He pointed out that one of the major reasons for the develop- ing countries failing to reach the target of MDGs in time is the indif- ference of the rich countries that are not playing their roles properly ‘The lecture was followed by an animated Question and Answer session during which members of the audience were engaged with Dr. Moniruzzaman, asking relevant questions and sharing their thoughts on the topic. Workshop on Writing ‘Textbook (Continued from 1" page) «27 June 2015 with teachers involved in the textbook writing project of BIIT: Prof. Dr. Abdur Rahman Anwari, Vice President (Research) of BIT presided over the workshop. M Abdul Aziz, Executive Director of BIIT, acted as the moderator of the workshop. News Letter M Abdul Aziz began the workshop by sharing the process of develop- ing the course outline and writing textbook. He inspired the begin- nets who are planning to write a textbook. He advised them to write down what they deliver during lectures in the class following a proper format. All teachers (Forty) involved in the textbook writing project participated to the work- shop and presented their write-ups ‘they had already completed and shared personal experiences with one another. Most of the participants are from major public & private universities of Bangladesh namely Rajsbahi University (RU), Chittagong University (CU), Islamie University Kushtia (UK), National University (NU), International Islamic Univer- sity Chittagong (UC), Northern University Bangladesh (NUB), Bangladesh Islami University (BIU), — Manarat International University (MIU) and so on. At the end, Prof Dr Abdur Rahman Anwari, Vice President (Research) of BIT concluded that the land & ‘environment of Bangladesh is very fertile for researchers. So, every researcher should search qualita- tive information in their field of study and try to set relevant Islamic inputs in each and every topic. Try WTEC Group Meeting / Team Meeting ‘Twenty six (26) group/team meet- ings were held for the textbook writing purpose with different faculties such as the Faculty of Business Studies, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Law during this year Redesigning Course Curriculum ix (6) courses were redesigned by the teachers of the University of Dhaka, University of Chittagong, University of Rajshahi and Islamic University Kushtia during this period under report. Providing Islamic Resource Materials (One hundred thirteen (113) journals, one hundred fifty-six (156) articles and forty-one (41) books related to Islamic perspectives were provided to the textbook writers and researchers during the period under report. A library reader has easy accessibility to WIFI technology. It was on 4 Mar 2015 when hhe breathed his last atthe age of 61 Dr Hoque was a former Professor of Finance & Banking of Chittagong University.
