Second Agency Visit: (Overview of Events)

When I met with the principal during the first visit, he asked me if I wanted to be part of
car duty. I understand that this is part of a teachers job, so I jumped at the opportunity. I
completed the first part of the day as usual. The students were in the computer lab and I assisted
the teacher. I made some copies of worksheets and helped her staple some word-family booklets
for the students. Again, the teacher had very little to say to me, nor was I able to have much
interaction with the students.

At 3 oclock, students line up in the hall to be taken to the bus area or they walk to the
play room to catch their rides. The students are lined up by grade level. The principal stands
outside and announces the names on the car tags. The teachers inside, along with me, are tasked
with ensuring that the students hear their names. In comparison to my expectations, this was a
much more efficient process. I actually enjoyed doing car duty with the other teachers.

ABCs of Reflections

Affect: My second day in service learning was okay. I was still aggravated that I was not
able to be more active within the students learning environment. It was really aggravating to sit
to the side and be completely uninvolved. After finishing my time within the classroom, I went
on to participate in car duty. The teacher that watched over me during this was much more
interactive. She let me ask questions about a teachers daily routine at New Center, how certain
things were conducted at the school, etc. This would definitely become a highlight of my service
learning.

Behavior: My actions included being mostly uninvolved with the students during class
time. While they were in the computer lab, I assisted the teacher by making copies and
completing other tasks that were asked of me. I remained polite, professional, and tried to
engage my teacher in a conversation, despite her lack of interest. Once I was participating in car
duty, I continued to remain professional and tried to assist the other teachers by calling the names
of the students. The only thing I would change about this scenario is that I wish I had been more
confident in myself and my abilities.

Cognition/Content: In class, we have discussed that a teachers duties will vary and that
they do not end at 3:15 each day. Teachers are listeners, givers of advice, caregivers, advocates,
protectors, biggest supporter, and sometimes even a critic. Teachers prepare more for the next
days lesson than what they actually receive credit for. Teachers also take time after school to
ensure that the students reach their transportation home in a safe manner. A teachers job never
ceases at 3:15 p.m.
