For our research project we decided to do what effects having a job has on a student's
GPA. We started off asking simple questions such as what gender, what grade, and what GPA
the student has. Then we asked questions more pertaining to our research question such as, In
what college is the student enrolled, Does the student have a job, How many hours a week
does the student work, Is their job on or off campus, and Is the job more active or less
active. For collecting data we used google forms. Students from Professor Lewallens classes
took our survey, giving us the data we needed. After everybody took the different surveys we
For our gender part of the survey our chart showed us that there was sixty more females
than males. There was ninety-three females and only thirty-three males. This shows there are
more than double the amount of females. Most of the students who took our survey did not state

if they were they were another gender or if they prefer not to say.
When separating the 127 respondents into what gender category there were more females
who answered the survey then there was male. Even though less males answered the survey

when comparing their average GPA to the females average GPA they had a higher average than
the females.

There was 127 respondents who took our survey. 65 were freshmen, 30 were sophomore,
24 were juniors, and 7 were seniors. There were more freshmen who took the survey then there
Out of the 37 freshmen surveyed their average GPA was 3.32. The 30 sophomore that
were surveyed their average GPA was 3.05. The 24 juniors that were surveyed their average
GPA was 3.12. The 7 seniors that were surveyed their average GPA was 3.19. The freshmen had
Of the students surveyed, the average GPA was a 3.21. Of all the GPAs, the median GPA
was a 3.20. The max GPA was 4.25 while the minimum was 1. According to the ASU GPA
calculator the average GPA of 3.20 is a letter grade of a B and the minimum GPA of 1 is a letter
grade of a D.
Out of the 127 respondents who filled out what specific college they go to The Mary Lou
Fulton, Teachers College had the most students enrolled with 53 students. The next highest
college that had the most students enrolled was the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences which

had 29 students enrolled. There was no students enrolled in School for the Future of Innovation
When looking at the results of the respondents different colleges based on gender there
was in some cases where there was more females who responded that belonged that college than
males. Since Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College was one of the top colleges out of the 53
students 48 were female and 5 were male. The next highest college was College of Liberal Arts
When asking the 127 respondents if they had a job 73 people said that they had a job and
When further explored the average GPA based on if they had a job or not. The average
GPA if they had a job was 3.15. If they did not have a job their average GPA was a 3.30. This
shows that the average GPA is higher if they do not have a job then if they did.

When breaking it down even more, if the respondents said they did have a job we broke it
down by average GPA by grade. The freshmen who had a job had an average GPA of 3.32. The

sophomores who had a job had an average GPA of 2.95. The juniors who had a job had an
average GPA of 3.05. The seniors who had a job had an average GPA of 3.04.
When asking the people who did have a job how many hours a week do they spend
working the average hours was 22.75 hours a week. The maximum hours worked was 60 hours.
For the purpose of our research we decided that it would be important to note whether the
students job was on campus or not. The reason is because if a student's job is on campus then
they would spend less time getting to and from work. Out of the seventy-three people that said
they had a job that took the survey, sixty of them worked off of campus and only thirteen worked
on campus. This shows that the majority of students that have a job work off of campus.

The average GPA of students that have a job and it is off campus was over a 3.15.
Students with a job on campus have an average GPA of 3.02. According to our research students
that had a job off campus generally have a higher GPA than students with a job on campus.

Out of the 73 students who responded yes to having a job 50 of the respondents said their
job was active which means they had no free time during work to complete homework. 23
respondents said they had a less active job which means they had free time during work to
When calculating the average GPA for what type of job the respondents had was an
enormous difference. The average GPA for people who had active job was a 3.09. Compared to
the average GPA of an active type of job the less active type had an average GPA of 3.27.

What effects does having a job have on a students GPA?
Throughout our research, we have found that there are plenty of attributes that can have
an impact on ones grade point average. We have also found that, in many cases, a students
GPA will drop significantly during their sophomore year of college. Our research proved that
students who do not have a job have a significantly higher GPA than those who do have a job.

This could be clearly related to the surplus of time that those students have to spend on their
studies. If we were to do our research over again, I would like to ask students whether their job
was primarily in the mornings, the night time, or overnights to see if that also had an impact on
their GPA.
