Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan

21st Century Literature from the Philippines and the World

I. Content Standard
The learner will be able to understand and appreciate the elements and contexts of 21st
century literature from the regions.

II. Performance Standard


The learner will be able to demonstrate understanding and appreciation of 21st century
Philippine literature from the regions through:
1. a written close analysis and critical interpretation of a literary text in terms of
form and theme, with a description of its context derived from research; and
2. an adaptation of a text into other creative forms using multimedia.

III. Learning Competencies


Differentiate/compare and contrast the various 21st century literary genres and the
ones from the earlier genres/periods citing their elements, structures, and traditions.

IV. Specific Learning Objectives


At the end of the discussion, the students should be able to:
1. determine the elements of poetry in the poem, “The Road Not Taken”;
2. interpret and write a critical analysis of a poem based on the elements of poetry;
and
3. develop appreciation on the importance of the elements of poetry.

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,


And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveller, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,


And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay


In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh


Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less travelled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Elements of Poetry
1. Sense – words, images, and symbols
a. Diction refers to the denotative and connotative meanings of the lines of poetry.
b. Images and Sense Impressions pertains to the choice of words used to create
sensory images which appeal to the readers’ senses.
2. Sound – creative use of words by the poets to imitate sound
a. Rhythm refers to the order alteration of strong and weak elements in the flow of
sound and silence.
b. Meter pertains to the duration, stress, or number of syllables per line.
c. Rhyme Scheme defines the formal arrangement of rhymes in a stanza of the
whole poem.
3. Structure – arrangement of words and lines to fit together, and the organization of
the parts from the whole
a. Word Order refers to the natural arrangement of words in each verse.
b. Punctuation pertains to the use of punctuation marks to clearly indicate
emotions.
c. Shape defines the poet’s choice of contextual and visual design, omission of
spaces, capitalization, and lower case.
d. Tone refers to the poet’s or speaker’s attitude toward the subject, toward the
reader, or toward himself.
e. Voice explains the speaking persona in poetry where specific characters are not
indicated as the speaker.

VII. Practice
Find a partner then write a critical analysis of the poem, “love is thicker than forget”
by EE Cummings.

1. Read the poem, “The Tree” by Jose Corazon De Jesus on pp. 64-65, then answer
Enrichment Activity I and II on pp. 65-66.
2. Write the classes of poetry.
