Precisely! It is hard to decide and that is also the
feeling that the persona felt in the poem that we
will discuss today. The poem is titled “The Road
Not Taken” by Robert Frost.
2. Pre-reading
a. Background of the Author
Before reading the poem, let’s get to know more
about the author – Robert Frost.
Do you know the celebrity game show in GMA 7
– Celebrity Bluff? Yes, Sir.
Good that you know that because I will present
statements about Robert Frost. You are going to
say FACT if the statement expresses a correct
idea about Robert Frost and BLUFF if it does not.
Let’s start Celebrity Bluff.
Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874, in
England.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “bluff”
Correct! It is a bluff because Robert Frost was
born in San Francisco but he moved
back to his family’s home in New England after
his father died when he was a young boy.
As a young man, Frost attended Dartmouth
College and Harvard, but he didn’t graduate.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “bluff”
You’re wrong because it is a fact. He was not
able to graduate that’s why he worked as a
farmer, an editor, and a schoolteacher instead.

In 1911, he decided to move to England in hopes

of getting his poetry published there.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “fact”
Correct! His first book of poetry was published in
England in 1913, and it was well received. When
he returned to the United States, he was
surprised by the favorable American reviews of
his poems.
In 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943, he won the
Pulitzer Prize for poetry.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “bluff”
It is a fact. He became a four-time Pulitzer Prize
winner in poetry. The Pulitzer Prize is considered
a great honor by all who receive it.
At the age of 25, Frost was honored when asked
to write and recite a poem for President John F.
Kennedy's inauguration.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “fact”
It’s a bluff. At the age of 86, John F. Kennedy
invited Robert Frost to speak at his inauguration
on January 20, 1961.
On January 29, 1963, Frost died from
complications related to prostate surgery.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “bluff”
It is a fact. Robert Frost died because of that.
b. About the Poem
Before we read the poem, let me tell you first the
story behind it.
 First published in Frost's collection
Mountain Interval in 1916.
 Edward Thomas, another poet, is the
inspiration of The Road Not Taken.
 Thomas's indecision and regret regarding
what paths to take inspired Frost's work.

B. Lesson Proper
I. Activity (Presentation of the Lesson)

a. Setting the Guidelines for Reading

Kindly sit properly and remember to stay focus
while reading the poem.
b. Raising the Motive Question
Upon reading the poem, try to answer this
question:
What does the speaker encounter?
c. Reading
Let us read the poem altogether.
The Road Not Taken
by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, and I –
I took the one less traveled by,
2. Analysis (Discussion) And that has made all the difference.
a. Answering the Motive Question
Let’s go back to my question a while ago.
What does the speaker encounter?
The speaker is walking down a road in a forest The speaker encounters a fork in the road.
and he encounters a two roads diverged.
b. Answering Comprehension
Questions
To check if you really understand the poem,
answer the following comprehension questions:
 What do the paths or roads usually The road could mean choices the speaker has to
symbolize? What, then, are forked roads? make in life.

 What did each of the two roads look like? One road has undergrowth and the other one is
grassy, but according to the persona, the roads
are similarly untrodden.

What lines support your answer? The lines that support my answer are:
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.

 What road did the persona take? The persona takes the grassy road – the second
one being described.

What lines support your answer? The lines that support my answer are:
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

 Do you think the persona was happy with (Answer may vary.)

his decision? Prove your answer. The speaker might feel relieved or happy because
he made a good choice.
The speaker might feel regret because he made a
poor choice.

 Why do you think the title is “The Road

It seems as if the road not taken has always
Not Taken”?
been on the persona’s mind as he imagines that
he will be referring to the journey “ages and
ages hence”.

3. Abstraction (Generalization)
The teacher will facilitate a simple game titled
“Miss Q and A”.
Since the poem is about making decisions, the
following questions will be asked:
I would rather see my crush in a shameful
 Would you rather see your crush in a
situation because whatever happens he/she will
shameful situation or be seen by your
crush in an awkward situation? still be my crush.

 Would you rather be loved by the person

you hate or be disliked by the person you I would rather be loved by the person I hate
loved? because I might learn to love him/her as well.
On the other hand, I don’t like to be disliked by
the person I loved because if that happens I am
sure that I have done something that leads
him/her to dislike me.
 Would you rather love the person who
loves you more or the person you loved I would rather love the person I loved the most
the most? because no matter how happy or painful it is of
loving him I will not give up to fight for my love
with him/her.
Class, just always remember that in making
decisions we need to think of ourselves and to
think of the welfare of the others. Your decision
should be for everyone’s happiness. One more
thing, let us not be sad if we have made a wrong
decision. Instead, let us turn that decision into a
good one and not to turn that decision into
another bad decision.
4 . Application
The teacher will group the class into five.
Group Task:
Perform a role play that presents a situation
wherein you have to make choices. You also
need to present the consequences that might
happen after having your decision.
Each group will be graded using a rubric.
(Attached is the rubric.)
