Is it easy to decide? No, Sir. I find it hard to have a decision.
Precisely! It is hard to decide and that is also the
feeling that the persona felt in the poem that we
will discuss today. The poem is titled “The Road
Not Taken” by Robert Frost.
2. Pre-reading
a. Background of the Author
Before reading the poem, let’s get to know more
about the author – Robert Frost.
Do you know the celebrity game show in GMA 7
– Celebrity Bluff? Yes, Sir.
Good that you know that because I will present
statements about Robert Frost. You are going to
say FACT if the statement expresses a correct
idea about Robert Frost and BLUFF if it does not.
Let’s start Celebrity Bluff.
Robert Frost was born on March 26, 1874, in
England.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “bluff”
Correct! It is a bluff because Robert Frost was
born in San Francisco but he moved
back to his family’s home in New England after
his father died when he was a young boy.
As a young man, Frost attended Dartmouth
College and Harvard, but he didn’t graduate.
Is it a fact or a bluff? “bluff”
You’re wrong because it is a fact. He was not
able to graduate that’s why he worked as a
farmer, an editor, and a schoolteacher instead.
B. Lesson Proper
I. Activity (Presentation of the Lesson)
What did each of the two roads look like? One road has undergrowth and the other one is
grassy, but according to the persona, the roads
are similarly untrodden.
What lines support your answer? The lines that support my answer are:
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
What road did the persona take? The persona takes the grassy road – the second
one being described.
What lines support your answer? The lines that support my answer are:
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Do you think the persona was happy with (Answer may vary.)
his decision? Prove your answer. The speaker might feel relieved or happy because
he made a good choice.
The speaker might feel regret because he made a
poor choice.
