1. Standards:
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.1.9
Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.
oObservable objective: Students will be able to compare and contrast two stories using a
Venn diagram.
Multicultural goal: Develop an educational environment that promotes respect for differences.
o Observable objective: Students will be able to compare experiences different cultures.
Auditory-Visual-Kinesthetic learning styles: Visual and Auditory watching/listening to video,
watching/listening to teacher create list
Gardner's Intelligence: Visual watching video, seeing a Venn diagram filled out, filling out their
own Venn diagram; Verbal hearing the differences in the video, listening to the teacher explain
what goes on a Venn diagram; possibly Interpersonal if they work in groups
2. Materials: Let Them Play
Baseball Saved Us
Computer/projector
Venn diagram handout one for each student
Venn diagrams completed for elephant/giraffe and for 2 books
Pencils

3. Instruction- learning Process:

DAY ONE
Do First: Show giraffe and elephant, same/different video. This will give student a basic idea of
comparing and contrasting to prepare them for Venn diagrams
Mini-lesson: Explain the different parts of a Venn diagram. Make one on the overhead as a class
for giraffes and elephants. Blank diagram will be filled out by teacher on the projector (see
completed copy for teachers reference)
Guided Practice: Read Let Them Play as a class, make a list of information about the book,
events, topic, characters, etc Ask students to recall information for the list. Teacher will write
the list on the dry erase board. (see complete Venn diagram for sample answers).
DAY TWO
Do First: Ask students to recall the story Let Them Play from the day before. Review the list on
the board from yesterday. (Ask several students to read one word at a time). Ask a student to
recall what a Venn diagram is.
Guided Practice: Read Baseball Saved Us as a class, make a list of information about the
book, events, topic, characters, etc Ask student to recall information for the list. Teacher will
write the list on the dry erase board. (see complete Venn diagram for sample answers).
Independent Practice: Each student will be given a blank Venn Diagram. Students will fill out
the diagram with information from both books. Ask the students to write at 3 least words in each
column of the Venn diagram: 3 that only relate to Let Them Play, 3 that only relate to Baseball
Saved Us, 3 that could go in both, which now go in the center column. Each student must fill out
a diagram, but they may work in small groups at their table if they need help. Walk around the
room, assisting as needed.
Exit Slip: Students will turn in the completed Venn diagram.

5. Reflection:
During the time of making lists with students, be sure to ask them how they feel about the stories:
Do they think the events were fair? Are these things that still happen today?
Be sure to explain to students that this process will be necessary later for writing assignments. If
students are struggling with the concept of comparing/contrasting with Venn diagrams, work with
manipulatives: students can sort by shapes and color: same color/different shape and vice versa.
To make this lesson more active, have students stand in various groups of boys/girls, like
grapes/apples, have siblings, etc in order to demonstrate same/different.
