Children with Differing Abilities Mid-term Media Review

1. LRE means the least restrictive environment. I do not believe that this would be the least

restrictive environment then or now. It may have seemed like the only or best choice the

parents had. However, it would be more beneficial for her to get treatment at home and been

sent to a normal public school just like everyone else.

2. The residential school was the most restricted however Bay Area Poly Technic would be the

least restrictive.

3.

a. At this point of the movie I feel the Father is experiencing denial and isolation. You

see the dad drinking a lot and leaving the situation whenever it gets tough for him to

handle. At this point the father even says look at her she is beautiful then starts

making excuses such as it was an accident.

b. At the point that the dad is experiencing denial and isolation the mother is

experiencing acceptance. She is trying to get help for her daughter and the family she

is doing what she can and what most people did back then.

4. In this day in age Carla could not be kicked out of school if her behavior/choices were related

to her disability. There are laws in place to protect people that have a disability now.

5. This situation would not be ideal for parent and teacher communication. They were rarely

seeing each other and they wouldnt know or understand Carla to the best of either of their

abilities because she is not in a LRE. Open communication between teacher and parent is so

crucial to the development of all students. Parents can help fill in teachers with situations at

home or things that they see or hear at home. Parents can also inform teachers with
information like my son asked a lot of questions on his homework last night. Something as

simple as that can help us as teachers ask the child more questions and get to the bottom of

it maybe they need more time in a certain subject, maybe they just didnt understand one

little part, or maybe there is something much bigger going on.

6.

a. Invisibility- the father drank and wasnt around much when Carla was younger

b. Infantilizing- When the mother takes the napkin and puts it in Carlas lap. Caroline

mailed her pictures she drew instead of writing her letters.

c. Objectifying- When the kids going up the stars calling Carla stupid.

7. I dont think you can ever make a good assumption. It is like assuming something without all

the information. I think this family like all families have their problems and each person has

something they could work on but I think Carla is extremely resilient.

8. The mother values that her going to be son-in-law is using her schooling in his career however

when Carla says she wants to go to school the mom shuts her ideas down as if she knows

Carla cant do it when in all reality she hasnt even been given a chance to see if she can or

not.

9. The administrator was thinks she should try going to college which is inspiring and giving her

hope, while the mom thinks her way is best but it is holding Carla back

10. At home, it seems to me that the maid was a big part in her life and then the administrator at

the school

11. Using people first language is more socially appropriate and acceptable because it is more

respectful full you are not say that this is what the person is but that they have this. The

person is not the disability but that the person has a disability.
12. No one want to hear people like when referring to a loved one. I think she is offended

because she is starting to see Carlas potential and has seen what Carla has overcome which

I believe is more than what the mother thought Carla could do.

13. By contacting her with other parents with children that are in the same situation and facing

the same struggles.

14. Postsecondary goals she or he hopes to achieve after leaving high school, IEP goals, the

transition services that the student will receive to support his or her a achieving the IEP goals

15. Having and IEP, as well as counseling for his behaviors

16. She is considered exceptional because she is resilient and has overcome many obstacles.

17. She may be even more exceptional and her family may have help and understood her

disability more.

18. Their children may or may not have a disability however they can talk with doctors and get

early intervention. They can also get their children tested early on for disabilities and seek the

best help for doctors and teachers as well as having open communication to help the situation

and insure the best help and support for them and their family.
