Lesson Plan: Rote Melody Teaching

1. GOALS
Students will play first 36 bars of Sakura on
respective parts
Students will demonstrate stylistic understanding
through shaping
Students will demonstrate understanding of musical
hierarchy

2. STRATEGIES
Modelling proper phrase shape/dynamic
Discussion of contrapuntal texture
Comparison to improv activity

3. MATERIALS
Instruments
Sheet music for piece

4. PROCEDURES
Begin by reviewing melody:
Model the melody on my instrument (clarinet)
Ask students what character they hear
Reminder of some words that were used
last time it was taught slow, gentle, a
little sinister
How to achieve character with melody?
Shaping!!
Provide two examples, ask which has more
character
All students play melody in concert F
Ask them to play it several ways:
Over-exaggerate conducting to direct
them
Run first 36 bars again:
Ask students to listen out for who has the
melody
If you have the melody, you cant answer
that its you
Play again from m. 13with students who have
melody playing slightly out

Those without melody should also back off
some
Ask those who dont have melody what theyre
playing
Counter-melody? Harmonic function?
Atmosphere?
How does this compare to the improv with
ostinato?
Once sound is re-shaped with attention to
hierarchy, style, character & musical expression,
play 36 bars once more

5. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES
Students have adjusted their balance to reflect
melody first
Students play melody with appropriate ebb & flow
stylistically
