Functional Analysis
Exercise Sheet 1

Exercise 1

(a) Show that there exists a sequence (fn )nN C[0, 1] such that fn 1 = 1 for all n N but
fn for n ;

(b) Let the sequence (xn )nN C([0, 1]) be given by xn (t) = ntn , t [0, 1], n N. Show that (xn )
is a Cauchy sequence w.r.t. 1 .

Exercise 2 C

Let X := C 1 ([a, b]) = {f C([a, b]) : f dierentiable on (a, b) and f continuous on [a, b]} (a < b).
For f X let

p1 (f ) := f = sup{|f (s)| : s [a, b]},

p2 (f ) := f = sup{|f (s)| : s [a, b]},
p3 (f ) := p1 (f ) + p2 (f ).

Show that:
(a) (X, p1 ) is a normed vector space which is not complete;

(b) p2 is not a norm on X;

(c) (X, p3 ) is a Banach space.

Exercise 3 C

Let the SNCF-metric on R2 be given by

{
|x y|, if x = y for some > 0,
d(x, y) =
|x| + |y|, otherwise,

where | | is the Euclidean norm on R2 . Show that d is a metric on R2 . Sketch the unit circle

Every Friday a new exercise sheet comes out. It can be downloaded from the above mentioned
webpage.

For every exercise sheet, you can hand in for correction the two exercises marked with a C.
Your solutions must be handed until 13:30 on the next Friday (e.g. Exercises 2 & 3 from Exercise
Sheet 1 must be handed until 13:30 on Friday, October 26) into the Functional Analysis-box
next to Room 3A-03 in the Allianz- Gebaude. The corrected solutions can be found in the
Functional Analysis-box next to Room 3A-15 in the Allianz-Gebaude.

For every exercise marked with a C, you can get at most 5 points. To get an Exercise certificate

(Ubungsschein) it is sucient to achieve 50% of the points from the first seven and 50% of
the points from the remaining exercise sheets.

You are allowed (and it is strongly recommended) to hand in your solutions in groups of two.
Please mark both names and immatriculation numbers on your solution sheets.
