school has about 161/532 of the students on free and reduced lunch. The enrollment
race/ethnicity has about 340/532 of the students are white. While 33/532 identify with

students at the Madshatum Institute of Learning have IEPS. Overall, the school is very
diverse. The Madshatum Institute of Learning is devoted to help student learning. The
school has recently implemented a 1:1 initiative using iPads.
2) Device(s) / Software (5 points):
Canvas
iPads
management
3) Justification for your choices (15 points):
Canvas:
We chose to do Canvas because our experience with Canvas has
been really positive. Also, MCCSC uses Canvas at their schools and after talking
with Mike Watson, it seemed like Canvas was having a positive effect on their
school. We thought it would be good to have a program like Canvas included in
our professional development plan because most schools use a software similar
to it, so we thought it would be good to prepare the teachers at our school to be
able to use all of the parts of Canvas. This will improve the use of Canvas in the
classrooms because the teachers will then be more confident in using it and it will
be more effective in the classroom.
iPads:
We chose to do iPads because they are versatile. There are a
variety of programs and apps that can be uploaded to the devices. The iPads can
be distributed to the separate age groups, uploaded with individual programs and
applications that can fit their needs. Many schools have switched to using iPads
1:1. MCCSCs middle schools are 1:1 with iPads. This allows the students to
have individual access to information. It will also improve cooperation amongst
students and teachers. The iPads will allow the students to do hands on learning
as well. Not only are the iPads great for the students, but for the teachers as well.
Teachers are now able to do more enriching class lessons, possibly flip their
classroom, and do more PBL based learning. Over all, the iPads would be huge
improvement to the learning process of the school.
Management
We decided to do one of our professional developments over
classroom management of technology devices. We decided to do this because
we believe that one of the biggest worries of teachers who are incorporating
technology in their classroom is that they will not be able to control their students.
We believe that a PD over this topic would increase the confidence of our
teachers incorporating the technology into their classrooms. This is true because
Mike Watson mentioned to us the professional development that MCCSC does
for classroom management and how much it encouraged the teachers to
incorporate the technology more in their classrooms.

4) Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 Activities (40 points):

Q1-iPads
Play Date
For this meeting we want to do an activity similar to the play date
activity. We will have many iPads at the meeting for each teacher to get their
own. We will then spend a little bit of time introducing some of the apps that our
on the iPads. After doing this we will give all of the some individual time to look
through the applications and just play with them. We believe by letting the
teachers explore the different apps on the devices, they will learn how to work the
devices by themselves. This is key because if the educators are able to problem
solve, then they will better remember how to use the different apps. We will then
have the teachers get into small groups and discuss with their colleagues what
they explored. This will help the teachers learn even more ways about how to use
the apps. We will then end the session by coming together as a whole group and
get ideas from what the teachers learned about and discussed. We believe that
all of this will get the teachers better familiarized with the iPads and be more
confident in using them for lessons and it can help them think of ways to add the
apps into their lesson plans to enhance them.
Q2- Canvas
For canvas, we are going to do a hands on approach. Prior to
meeting with all of the departments, a member from each department will go
through a pre course. They will be our experts on Canvas. During this pre course,
the tech coaches and or technology department will run through with them on
how Canvas works. They will go through and actually set up their own classroom
links. Once they have gone through this, there will be a session for the rest of the
teachers. During this session, instead of having the teachers sitting and watching
on how to use Canvas, they will also go through the process of creating their own
classroom sites. The teachers will be broken up into their own departments, and
our department experts will assist in the session by aiding their colleagues in
creating their sites.
Q3- management
For classroom management, the session will be broken up into
two parts. First, how to deal with classroom management as a whole now that
the students have 1:1 initiative. Then, the second part of the session will be
different types of apps that can be used to help with classroom management.
During the first half of the session, the teachers of one of the grades that piloted
the iPads will be giving a short presentation about tips and tricks that worked in
classroom management in their grades. They will be discussing back up plans for
the technology as well as making sure that the teacher is walking around to
ensure students are being productive. The second half of the session will also
involve a teacher led introduction done by the other grade that piloted the iPads.
They will be using tools such as Class dojo, timer apps, and edModo.
Q4- everything
Edcamp model
For this session we decided to do something similar to the
edcamp model. We believe that this will be a great ending professional
development because it recaps everything that we learned throughout the year
and it also answers any leftover questions. For this session we will have teachers
come in and write their questions on post-it notes and put them at the front of the
room. From there we will pick out some of the big questions and then have the
teachers divide into groups according to what questions they want to discuss.
The teacher who wrote the question will then lead the group discussion about the
question. After some discussion time we will come back together as the whole
group. Each group will then share some key ideas about what they discussed
and share with the whole group. We believe this activity will help teachers answer
many of their questions and also provide a lot of collaboration time for the
teachers.

5) Support of Teachers Outside of PD Activities (10 points):

Outside of the PD activities we want to have a hotline of teachers who can be
called to come and help any teachers that may be having problems. This would be really
helpful because then the teachers will be helping each other and collaborating. Also, we
could have a forum where teachers could constantly post questions and then we could
answer those questions, or even other teachers can answer. We could also have
another forum where teachers could post videos, lessons, etc. about things that worked
in their classrooms to give other teachers ideas.

6) Evaluation of PD (15 points):

We think that we can determine if our PD was successful because we can
interview the teachers to see if technology use has increased in their classrooms and
their view of the technology and their management skills has improved. In these
interviews we will have questions for the teachers that have to do with technology use,
what their suggestions are for the PDs in the future, and also how their students are
adapting to the technology. We believe that it is extremely important that technology use
increases, but also that the confidence of the teacher increases too. We want to make
sure that our teachers are confident and that the technology is actually enhancing their
lessons.
