INT. CORRIDOR - NIGHT

A 42 years old constable enters the scene with a lethargic

walk carrying his danda. He keeps on telling the inmates that
the lights shall switch off soon. He comes and stops by a
cell and opens it. The inmate is a little surprised and he
looks up at him.

CONSTABLE
Saabne Bulaya hain. Chal.

Constable walks away. The prisoner is puzzled. He follows the

constable.

INT. INSIDE THE INSPECTORS ROOM - NIGHT

The inspector is seated in a room lit by a bulb. He is
reading some documents while the prisoner walks in. He has an
air of authority and looks at the guy who is standing with
his head tilt down.

INSPECTOR
Kaidi no 302?

RAMCHARAN
Umaar kayed

INSPECTOR
(after a pause)
Kaal kya hain pata hain?

Ramcharan has a blank look on his face.

INSPECTOR (CONT'D)
Ek khus khabri hain...

Ramcharan looks up
RAMCHARAN
Mera naya kambal agaya kya?

The inspector is taken aback.

INSPECTOR
Kal tujhe chor rahe hain.

Ramcharan is confused

RAMCHARAN
kiu?

Inspector picks up the release order and shows it.

INSPECTOR
Upaar se order aya hain. kaal 15
aug hain, chor rahe hain.

Ramcharan is thinking over the matter. He is apprehensive.

The inspector becomes restless,so passes forward the file to
him to sign.

INSPECTOR (CONT'D)
sign ... ? anguta?

Ramcharan takes a small step back

RAMCHARAN
Kya karunga saab bahar jake?
Ramcharan still thinks why is he being released. Inspector is
puzzled. He gets up and walks towards Ramcharan and makes him
sit.

INSPECTOR
Ghar ja... gharwalo se mil.

RAMCHARAN
Unhi ko toh mar ke aya hu!

INSPECTOR
Zindagi bari hain. Ja apna khet-
weit samhaal

RAMCHARAN
Kheti chalti toh zaher khilani ki
nawbat nahi ati.

The inspector is a bit irritated and goes and stands by a

window. Looks out.

INSPECTOR
Tu sayaad bhul gaya khuli hawa kya
hoti hain.

RAMCHARAN
Hawa ka kya hain saab , usse pet
toh nahi bharta?

INSPECTOR
Jao dekho in 7 saalo main duniya
kahan se kahan nikal gayi.

RAMCHARAN
Usi ka toh darr hain. Insaan aur
janwar ban gaya ho ga.

INSPECTOR
Janwar! Zara woh khil-khilate
baccho ke chehere toh dekho. Taab
yaad ayega ki insaan kya chis hai.

RAMCHARAN
Bacche toh mere bhi the saab. Zaher
se nahi marte toh bhuk se mar jate.

INSPECTOR
Nahi nahi abhi apna sarkar toh
sabka khayal rakhta hain.... duniya
itni bari hain ki sabke liye jaga
hain.

RAMCHARAN
Meri duniya toh yahin hain saab.

INSPECTOR
(after a pause)
Par meri duniya bhi to yahi hai.
mai to yahaan khush hun.

Ramcharan remains silent. he looks at the Inspector with

sympathy.

INSPECTOR (CONT'D)
(almost breaks in to a
monologue.)
Khush hun?!

Ramcharan looks in a different direction now. and the

inspector has a blank look. He seems to be lost. after a
while of pause...

RAMCHARAN
Aap ko yaad hai saab jab main ya
haan aayaatha, main apni takdeer ko
kos rahaa thaa. Par dheere dheere
main yahaa ka ho gaya. Ab haalaat
ne phirse meraa takdeer padalrahaa
hai aur main abhibhi usse nakhush
hun!

INSPECTOR
(he still in the
contemplative mood)
Nahi! Ye sach nahi hai. Mein khush
hun yahaan par.
(after a pause again)
Khush hun?!

RAMCHARAN
Do waqt ki khaanaa, thodasa kapda,
soneke liye ek jagha... itnaa hi to
banaadetaa hai hum jaisonki duniyaa
saab. Baahar jaake bhi to vahi
karnaa hai mujhe. To main kyun
badlu apnaa duniyaa?

INSPECTOR
(still contemplating)
Nahi! meri koyi izzat hai is samaaj
main. Mere bivi bachchae hain. Main
khush hun, azaad hun.
(after a pause)
Aazaad hun?! aazaad hun mere
seniors say? Mere bivi bachche ye
bandhan say? Main aazaad hun?!

RAMCHARAN
Saab kyaa aapne dekhaa hai... apnaa
jail main jahaan pe khaanaa
parostai hain wahaan pe ek neem ka
peed hai. Vo itnaasa thaa jab main
yahaan aayaatha. Aapne dekhaa kyaa
khoob nikhraa hai vo aaj?

INSPECTOR
(now looks at Ramcharan.
Sits next to him)
Haan... par kyaa tumko lagtaa hai
ki vo khush hai?! kyaa tumhe lagtaa
hai ki vo aazaad hai?

RAMCHARAN
Aazzad?!

Ramcharan looks at the inspector and inspector looks back at

him.
There is a long pause. We can hear the close sound loudly by
now.

WE CUT TO A CLOSE UP OF A CLOCK. THE HOUR HANDS MOVE AND THE

DAY CHANGES.

FADE TO BLACK.
End titles. As we see the titles, we hear the voice of
indipendence day celebration.
