rentalsfromRs3540perquintalin199596toRs200toRs240perquintalnow.

Forthestatethathasproducedabout2.26milliontonnesofpotatoesduringthecurrentseason
thePunjabgovernmenthasannouncedsomemeasurestoenablefarmerstogetbetterpricefor
theirproduce.

otherpartsofthecountry.BesidesafreightsubsidyofRs200aquintalwouldbepaidthrough
MarkfedforexportofpotatoesandRs50aquintaltootherstates.Themarketfeeandrural
developmentfeefromtwopercentto0.25percenttillApril30tofacilitatebuyersfromthestate
marketswhilethecommissionofcommissionagentshasbeenreducedfromfivepercenttoone
percent.

Besideslowprices,Rs200300perquintalforpotatoproduce,thepricesofpotatoseeds,too,
hadfallentoRs500600perquintal.Lastyear,thepricefortheproducewasuptoRs1,000
perquintal,whilethepricesforseedsvariedfromRs1,200toRs1,500perquintal.

Itsnoteworthythatthereare31coldstoragesinBathindadistrict.Outofwhich20arein
RampuraPhulsubdivision.Rampuracountsmorethan65percentofpotatogrowersofthe
district.Lastyear,theareaunderpotatocropwas5,800acreswhilethisyearitisaround6,000
hectaresinthedistrict.

KufriBahar,KufriSandhuri,KhyatiandPukhrajvarietiesofpotatoaregrowninRampura,
phul,NathanaandGonianablocksofBathindadistricts.

BharityaKisanUnionEktaUgraha,Bathinda,presidentShingaraSinghMannsaid,Farmers
shouldalsobegivenapackageofmeasuresthatcouldsavethemfromexploitationatthehands
