Protests: Then and Now

The Protestant Reformation begun by Martin Luther in 1517 helped

create more fairness and religious freedom for Christians at that time.
It also encouraged freedoms in other areas. The idea of protesting or
speaking out against injustice is one of our own countrys central beliefs.
Answer the questions below using your knowledge of the Reformation and
of current events today.

1. What two important ideas that are present in United States government
today that were influence by the Protestant Reformation?

2. Have you ever been part of a protest or seen one either in real life or on
TV? What was the protest about? How were the protesters trying to get
their point across?

3. On what side of the protest did you stand? (for or against the
protesters position) List a few reasons why you feel this way.

4. What do you think would help protests to remain peaceful as opposed to

resorting to violence(fires, looting, assault)? Are there any alternatives
available to people who feel they have been wronged by powerful institutions
like the government, the police, the church etc. besides protesting?
