Free write #1: What does Martin Luther King Day mean to you?
Martin Luther King Day (MLK) is celebrated on January 16th of every year. MLK is a
day chosen to celebrate the accomplishment of a wonderful leader known as Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. Many may wonder what made this man such a great leader in our country? Martin
Luther King grew up in the south during the 1960s when segregation was at its peak. He was the
face of the civil rights movement fighting for equality rights specifically for African Americans.
He used methods such as peaceful protests, speeches and advocated for a change through his
words.

Free write #2: What is the message of the cartoon Promises vs Reality?
In life, many people are promised things in life that are expected but, the reality of the
matter is that these promises never happen. The cartoon shows a confused man sitting at a table
as if he is about to be served dinner. He is ready to receive this scrumptious dinner that he was
probably promised but, once the server lifts the plate there is nothing but a bone underneath that
reads Reality. This is the sad truth in life sometimes that many things do not go as planned and
that reality can be really deceiving.

Free write #3: How was your previous ENG 101 class?
Previously in my last english class I had a good english professor. She teached us out of a book c
alled Everyones an author. This helped me learn to write a thoroughly detailed paper. The mai
n concepts I gained was a strong thesis, a map, and a conclusion. My introduction paragraphs bec
ame cliff hangers and made people want to learn more about my topics.

Free write #4: What are your favorite types of movies? What about them do you enjoy?
My favorite types of movies include comedy, romance, and thriller. I love comedy based
movies because I am a silly person and I really enjoy movies that make me laugh because I can
relate to many of the situations that may be going on in that movie. Comedy movies just overall
lighten the mood and can be enjoyed by everyone. In the same way, I love love loveee romantic
movies. Although I love laughing, I am also a very emotional person and I am all about the
theme love and watching others fall in love; I tend to cry at romantic movies a lot.
Thriller/suspenseful movies are an all-time favorite for me as well because I enjoy being scared
and its interesting to watch these characters portray these roles.
Free write #5: Describe a speaker you like, what do you like about him/her?
It's not often that I listen to speeches or public speakers. I like motivational speakers whenever I
get a chance to listen to one. For example, I like being in church. I like hearing the word and a p
ositive message that Ive been waiting to hear. I like listening to my
pastor tell me things that God needs me to know.

Free write #6: Do you feel you were taught grammar well? Why or why not?
I do feel like I have been taught grammar very well because I know how to properly write
and speak proper English. I know when to distinguish from a text language tone to a more
professional tone. Not to mention, grammar also involves knowing the use of punctuation,
sentence structure and other aspects of that which I learned well in school and continued to
practice which gave me the opportunity to express my grammar.

Free write #7: What do you want to know more about in respect to your topic?
My topic involves black oppression and how black men tend to linger onto this black
oppression and use it as an excuse to make certain decisions. I would like to know more about
how we as a community can help can the way people view black men and help them conquer in
their communities. I would also like to know that if we as a community find solutions will they
go through with it? Maybe the incarceration rates of black men will decrease and the graduation
and job rates will increase.

Free write #8: Describe at least one of the secondary sources you found. What research questions
do you see them being about to answer?
I found an online article by Aza Nedhari that basically talked about how black people are
oppressed in a community. The article answered questions such as the statistic of black men who
grow up oppressed and how they go through the society and become successful. It also answered
how black men are affected by the judicial system and how black oppression affects black men
in jobs and schools.

Free write #9: Breathe deeply. What went through your mind while you were breathing?
While deep breathing, I thought about the struggles I have been going through lately
mostly with school. I havent been as focused as I should have been lately and it is frustrating
because I feel really pressured to be such an excellent student. I might even be in danger of
losing my scholarship and failing my Bio class that I dropped last semester as well so it is just all
these things have me stressed out.

Free write #10: What perspective have you gotten so far from researching your topic?
After researching my topic and getting more involved into it. I have only been seeing one
similar perspective which is that black men are treated unfairly and are negatively affected by
oppression because of their skin color. On the other hand, one lady did disagree that the judicial
system does not make decisions based on ethnicity and skin color.

Free write #11: What would you grade this video?
I would give this video an A. It was inspirational and clearly got the message give more across
using pictures, videos and music. Not only did she use these genres to portray the meaning of her
video but also, she inserted texts to further portray her message.

Free write #12: Describe a time youve been in an argument. What was the subject? Did you win
or lose? Why do you think you won/lost?
An argument that I clearly remember having several times was with my mother when I was a
little younger. I used to get upset at the fact that she would always ask me questions but, accuse
me of lying; I never understood that. Why ask someone a question if you are just going to accuse
them of lying? As a result, we use to argue about that a lot and in this case, I lost because at the
end of the day it is her house and her rules. Regardless of how I felt towards the situation my
opinion does not really matter because she is the adult in this situation.

Free write #13: What policy change do you want to advocate in your Opinion Piece? If you
havent gotten that far, if you could change a law or school policy, what would it be and why?
I have not really thought much about what policy change I would advocate for my opinion piece
being that my opinion piece would be based on a topic that is a personal change in yourself and
the people around you. There are not laws against black men specifically in the U.S but there are
people that still advocate racism in their communities. Other than that, in relation to a law that I
would change is the legalization of marijuana. Marijuana is a plant that God put on this earth for
human beings to make use of. Personally, I do not believe marijuana is not a gate way drug nor
has anyone died for it so why is it illegal? Not to mention, marijuana is used as in the medical
field as a pain prescription to soothe patients similar to pills such as Tylenol and Ibuprofen.
