Remote Desktop Services: Personal Virtual Desktops

Punch List

You'll need at least two servers: one for your Remote Desktop Services role, and one
Hyper-V server to host your Windows 7 client VM's.

1) Install Remote Desktop Services on a Server 2008 R2 machine

a) Include the following Role Services
I) Remote Desktop Session Host
II) Remote Desktop Connection Desktop Broker
III) Remote Desktop Gateway
IV) Remote Desktop Web Access
Note: In a production environment, you would also install the Licensing
server role as well. In a test set-up, you can just use the 120 trial version.

2) Install the Desktop Experience feature on your Hyper-V host

3) Install the Remote Desktop Services virtualization host on your Hyper-V server

4) Make sure that your Windows 7 client machine has the same fully qualified domain
name in Hyper-V Manager as you named it when you joined the VM to the domain

5) Turn on Remote Desktop for your Windows 7 client machine

6) Edit the rdpprotocols.bat file to reflect on which virtualization host the VM is located
on

7) Run the rdpprotocols.bat on your Windows 7 client machine

8) Go into regedit on your Windows 7 VM client and alter the:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\TerminalServer
Double-click the AllowRemoteRPC registry entry. In the Value Data box, type 1 and
then click OK.

9) In the Firewall of your Windows 7 VM client, allow the Remote Service Management
through the firewall
10) In the Remote Desktop Connection Manager, run the Personal Desktops Wizard

11) Assign a Personal Desktop to a user

12) Add your Remote Desktop Server (not the virutalization host) as your application
source by going to Administrative Tools--> Remote Desktop Services--> Remote
Desktop Web Access Configuration

12) Add the user that will be allowed access to that particular VM to the Remote
Desktop Users group in the local policy of that machine.
