TAPE SCRIPT
Part 1
Man: Holidays for you. Sean speaking. Can I help you?
Woman: Oh, hi. Ive been looking at your website. Um, Im interested in a cycling holiday
in Austria in April. So, lets see. Ive got a calendar here. What are the date?
M: Well, that trip is in the middle of the month. It starts on the 17th of April (Q1) and it
finishes on the 27th.
W: That suits me. I cant leave work before the 10th of April.
M: Let me see if there are any spaces. Is it just for yourself?
W: Myself and my sister so two of us.
M: Yes. We have spaces.
W: Is it a big group?
M: At the moment there are 12 people booked on this trip and with you two that will be 14.
The maximum number is 16(Q2) so its almost fully booked. We cant go over that
because its hard to keep a larger group together.
W: I need to check that Im fit enough for this but the distances look OK. The website says
well ride approximately 45 km a day. Is that right?

4
M: Thats correct and Ive got the exact distances here. It really depends on which part of
the trip. Some days are only 35 km and some days are more. But youll never have to cycle
more than 50km in one day.
W: Oh, OK. I can manage that. And we stay in hotels?
M: Yes. They all have restaurants and the rooms have en-suite facilities.
W: Id better find out how much the holiday costs before I get too excited.
M: Including flights its 1,177 for one person.
W: Oh, well book our own flights on the Internet.
M: Ah, thats just 1,013 then(Q3). And we can book insurance for you if you want.
W: Mm and which meals are included in that price?
M: Well, er, breakfast of course. And the hotels will provide you with a packed lunch each
day. We do stop during the afternoon in a village somewhere for a rest, so any snacks you
buy then are extra(Q4). Then dinner will be in the hotel every evening and thats included
in the price of the holiday.
M: And you provide the bicycle of course. What else?
M: A lock and a bell come with the bike as well as lights although you shouldnt need to
cycle in the dark. But we wont allow you to cycle unless you bring a helmet(Q5). We
dont provide these locally because its really important it fits properly.
W: Ok.

Part 2.
S = Sami T = Tutor I = Irene
S: Dr. Barrett?
T: Sami, come in. Is Irene with you?
I: -Yes..
T: Good, sit down. Right, were looking at how far youve got with your research project
since we last met. You decided to do a survey about computer facilities at the university,
didnt you?
I: Thats right. We decided to investigate the universitys open access to a computer when
they need one, so we thought it would be a useful area to research.
T: Good. Its not a topic anyone has looked at before, as far as I know, so its a good
choice. So, what background reading did you do?
S: Well, we looked in the catalogues in the library, but we couldnt find much that was
useful. its such a specialised subject,, hardly anything seems to have been published about
it...
I: And as well as that, the technology is all changing so quickly.
S: But the open access centre has an online questionnaire on computer use that it asks all
the students to do at the end of their first year, and the supervisor gave us access to that

5
data, so we used it as a starting point for our research. It wasnt exactly what we needed,
but it gave us an idea of what we wanted to find out in our survey. Then, we designed
our own questionnaire.
T: And how did you use it?
I: We approached students individually and went through our questionnaire with them
on a one-to-one basis.
T: So, you actually asked them the questions?
I: Thats right. We made notes of the answers as we went along, and actually, we found
we got a bit of extra information that way as well - about the underlying attitudes of the
people we were interviewing - by observing the body language and things like that.
T: How big was your sample?
S:: Well, altogether we interviewed a random sample of 65 students, 55% male and
45% female.
T: And what about the locations and times of the survey?
S: We went to the five open access computer centres at the university, and we got about
equal amounts of data at each one. It took us three weeks. We did it during the week, in the
days and in the evenings.
T: Not the weekends?
S:: No.
T: So, presumably your respondents were mostly full-time students?
S:: Yes... oh, you mean we should have collected some data at the weekends, from the
part- time students? We didnt think of that.
T: OK. Its just an example of how difficult it is to get a truly random sample, so how far
have you got with the analysis of results?
I: Well, everyone agreed there was a problem, but were more interested in what they
think should be done about it. The most popular suggestion was for some sort of
booking system. About 77% of the students thought that would be best. But there were
other suggestions; for example, about 65% of people thought it would help if the
opening hours were longer, like 24 hours a day.

Part 4: Gap-filling
Yvonne: Any of you who are of my generation or older will no doubt remember the
strap. But for these youngsters listening, Id better explain because Im saying this for
your benefit. The trap, as they called it, was a thick piece of leather about an inch wide
and half as long as a belt and it was especially designed for hitting small children, on the
palms of their hands. Nowadays, if you do something wrong at school, you are unlucky if
you even get a telling off. And even the most serious offences get little more than a
concerned phone call from the head teacher to your mum and dad. Now when I was at St
Annes School for Girl in Fifties, we didnt have things quite so easy. It didnt take much
to get a strapping. Ill never forget the first time it happened to me. One morning, I came
to school in the wrong shoes- brown one instead of black and that was enough for the
principal to call me up in front of the whole class of children and beat my hand unitl it
bled. I saw this and many other examples of our schools discipline system as very cruel
and unfair.
Now, unlike many people of that time, I didnt just forget about it when my school days
were over. Soon I had children of my own the thought that they would one day get the
same treatment, really made my blood boil . And thats when I heard about P.O.P.P.I..
er . Parents Opposed to Physical Punishment Of Infants. All the other members were
like me. They had young children and didnt want some unfeeling teachers filling their
lives with misery. So we started writing letters. First, to the school, then to the education
department and eventually, to our local politicians, and in 1979, the government put an
end to the strap.. and to the cane . And to the paddle and we thought that we had
guarranteed our children the chance to grow up into fine young people, And that, Im
afraid, did not happen . my own son and daughter have turned into lazy , irresponsible
young adults who really have no idea how lucky they are. Im sure you all know people

7
like them.. and they are not the worst by far. But its only recently that I have begun to
think- to wish that they had never changed the law. Cruel it may have been, unfair it
often was, but it taught us our place in society. And thats something that few young
people today seem to know or want to respect. For example, we wouldnt have all the
teenage crime that goes on nowadays if those teenagers concerned had, when they had
been younger, been given the strap.
