Every time students move into another level of education, they tend to transfer to

schools that they think offers the best facilities and quality education. We will conduct a

research about the secondary schools inside General Santos City to help future high

school students know about the most preferred schools. This study will help us learn

about the secondary school that offers the best education and training to students by

conducting surveys among certain individuals. This research can make searching for

the ideal school convenient and easy for the future secondary students. This research

will help future secondary students to choose the best among the best schools here in

General Santos City. This research will help the least preferred school to improve what

they are lacking at and the most preferred school on maintaining the good quality they

have.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Education is one of the basic needs of human. It helps us to survive from

poverty. Education is divided into three levels, Primary, Secondary and Higher

Education. Secondary education is offered and managed by the Department of

Education. This is divided into two levels, Junior High school and Senior High school.

Junior High school is the first 4 years in Secondary Education. In the year 2016,

Philippines started to Senior High school program. This program consists different

strands that give training and preparation for Higher Education.

3
The educational facilities are key components of an excellent education system.

One of the highly populous areas in the Philippines, General Santos City, also

recognized as The Tuna Capital of the Philippines, features a lineup impressive

universities and colleges. There are 43 secondary schools in the city, 26 public schools

and 17 private schools.

1.2 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This target of this study is to identify the schools that have a highest preference.

Also, this research intends to identify the reasons on why the respondents selected the

specific secondary school. The goal is to have results of the top five most preferred

schools and know the reasons behind the success of the following schools. Enlighten us

about the standards and criteria of the people on how they choose a school is another

purpose of our study.

1.3 SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This research is limited to secondary schools within General Santos City. The

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter focuses on the definition of the word “school” and also quality

education as a factor to be the most preferred school. A school is an educational

institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the

teaching of students (or pupils) under the direction of teachers. To develop our

community, break generational poverty, transform thinking skills and abilities. School is

a place where people are taught to read, write, and socialize with the help of teacher.

Quality education is one of the most basic public services. It not only enlightens but also

empowers citizens and enables them to contribute to the maximum extent possible to

the social and economic development of their communities. It also provides the

foundation for equity in society.

2.1 School

As we all know, students take school as their second home. School is a place

where students are educated. It is a place where students learn and develop their skills

and knowledge. Schools offer different activities to develop their students

2.2 Quality Education

Quality Education plays a big role in every institution all over the world and it is to

provide students’ development. This quality education is every student’s need to

enhance their skills, talents and critical thinking skills. According to Dr.HaseenaV.A and

6
Dr.Ajims P.Mohammed (2015), quality is seen as a relative concept satisfying priorities

to students, teachers, technical and administrative staff, parents, would –be employees,

funding agencies and the society. In a manufacturing industry the product are pre-

determined and the user needs to be assured of the quality of the product. However, in

education, every element –the input, the process, and the output- is a human being and

cannot, therefore, be dealt with such a simplistic approach.

Education system affects also the economic growth because according to

Dr.HaseenaV.A, (2015) Education plays a big role in economic growth. Human

development to a great extent depends on the improvement in Education. Among

various levels of education, higher education has a pervasive and influential impact on

development. In conclusion, students studied in an institution with quality education

develop their students to achieve their potential as human beings and members of

society.

. According to Husain Salilul Akareem and Syed Shahadaf Hossain (2016)

student are studying abroad to have a quality education. Due to the lack of facilities and

poor education system of the developing countries, some of the students are joining

exchange- student program. According to Husain Salilul Akareem and Syed Shahadaf

Hossain (2016) People hope and continue to dream with Education for Sustainability,

Professor Karen Malone and Professor Margaret Somerville (2015). Other countries use

advanced technology in their Education System. International differences in institutional

structures of school systems such as external exams, school autonomy, private

competition, and tracking have been found to be able to account for a substantial part of

7
the cross-country variation in student achievement (see Woessmann 2016 for a recent

review).

Mobile Learning is helpful and effective way in learning, stated by Syed

Roohullah Jam, Farman Ullah, Hashim Ali and Fazlullah Kan (2016). Mobile Learning is

a process of learning with the use of mobile technologies such as, cellphones, tablets,

smartphones, androids and iPhone. These technologies are also portable that’s why

students prefer studying through M-Learning.

How to provide quality education? For the institution to have the quality

education, institution needs to follow standards. There’s a research said that “The

university’s status and activities may affect the student’s insight of higher quality

education (Husain Salilul Akareem and Syed Shahadat Hossain, 2016). On the other

hand, since the concept of quality education is still improving and growing, providing

quality education would be difficult (Robert Laurie, Yuko Nonoyama-Tarumi, Rosalyn

McKeown and Charles Hopkins, 2016).

Passion to your job can provide quality service. Therefore, if teaching is your

passion you can provide quality education. School Social Workers must be passionate

with their jobs within the school infrastructure to maintain the school's standards and to

maintain the loyalty and unity with school administration, Megan Callahan Sherman

(2016). School workers must also be effective to have a quality education. An effective

teaching creates natural opportunities for students to learn and practice specific social-

emotional skills (Dusenbury, Newman, et al., 2015). The augmenting collaboration with

8
school administration and implementing consistent standard, school workers should be

comfortable in self-advocacy within the institution. (Megan Callahan Sherman, 2016).

Schools having a positive vibes and approach help to promote a quality

education. Institution must have a positive learning environment that nurtures the

development of social-emotional capability (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and

Emotional Learning, 2015).

CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter discusses the methods or procedures done in this research. It also

contains the research design and the respondents in this research.

3.1 Research Design

In this study, the researchers used quantitative method which means collecting

and analyzing data is involved and also the use of computational and mathematical

tools. We used quantitative research to identify the most preferred Secondary School in

the city of General Santos. The researchers used Longitudinal study to collect the

gathered data of a population.

3.2 Respondents of the Study

In this research, the researchers used Stratified Random Sampling method in

selecting the participants. Overall there were 200 participants. The 200 participants are

divided into 5 categories, proportionally which means 40 each respectively. The first are

the businessmen, second are the professionals, third are the normal people, fourth are

the parents and lastly the pupils. If a respondent belongs to more than one category,

he/she must choose only one. In instances that the respondent is a businessman and

also a parent he/she will be given a chance to choose. The researchers selected the

respondents randomly.

10
3.2.1 Businessmen

The researchers randomly selected the business owners and stakeholders of

General Santos City

3.2.2 Professionals

Randomly selected Professionals of General Santos City under white collar jobs

were assessed. The professionals are one of the factors that affect the ranking of the

school.

3.2.3 Normal People

specifically in the barangay of Sinawal.

3.2.4 Parents

The selected parents are randomly selected in Dadiangas West Central

Elementary School. The parents of the pupils are also one of the factors that affect the

decision of pupils on selecting the quality school.

3.2.5 Pupils

The 40 selected pupils are from Grade six-Diamond of Dadiangas West Central

Elementary School, General Santos City that was officially enrolled during School year

2018-2019. The said section is a star section.

The researchers selected Dadiangas West Central Elementary School as their

target population among different schools in General Santos City. The said school is the

11
public school with highest population around General Santos City. The researchers also

choose it because it doesn’t offer a secondary education which means it helps to avoid

bias.

3.3 Questionnaire

The questionnaires are open ended. It consists of list of Secondary Private and

Public schools around the city of General Santos. Simple words are used, for the

respondents to easily understand the questions.

The questionnaires contain 5 questions. The first question is all about their

preference between public and private schools. The second question is what school

they prefer. The next question is the respondent’s reasons of choosing that school. The

fourth question is about their suggestion for the least preferred school. Lastly, the last

question is about their suggestions for the most preferred school. Every question the

researchers provide possible choices.

The researchers provide 3 different kinds of questionnaires. The first one is for

the pupils only. Second type of questionnaires is intended only for normal people,

professionals, and parents. The last type is for the businessmen. The sample of 3 types

of questionnaires is presented at the appendix.

3.4 Data Analysis

The researchers gathered and analyzed the data manually. They collected the

data with the help of the survey questionnaires. They use tally in analyzing and

12
interpreting the data. They use a manual method to make sure that every data were

considered.

13

CHAPTER VI

RECOMMENDATION

School rankings helps us choose a school that offers quality

education and complete facilities that will suffice our learning needs. This

ranking also helps the most preferred school and the least like schools to

improve and be one of the best in the future. For the future studies, we

recommend that they should have more respondents for a clearer results.

Future researchers should also include the top five least liked school so that

these schools will do their best to improve and be competitive among other

schools as well. We hope that similar researches will be conducted on other

cities as well and if possible it will be done in a national scale. For it is only

conducted in secondary education, we suggest that it should include other

levels of offered education. The purpose of this is to help schools improve and

make it easier for students to pick their ideal school.
