CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

0
Education is critical to shaping each individual's

future. A widely regarded as one of the building blocks of a

better life. It enables a person to cope with life. As One

of the government's primary goals are to serve the society

by providing students with relevant education that will

enable them to become more prolific and globally competitive

learners. The Department of Education (DepEd) in the

Philippines has Mission and Vision. The DepEd Mission is to

protect and promote the right of every Filipino to quality,

equitable, culture-based, and complete basic

education where: Students learn in a child-friendly, gender-

sensitive, safe, and motivating environment. The DepEd

Vision We dream of Filipinos who passionately love their

country and whose values and competencies enable them to

realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to

building the nation. As a learner-centered public

institution, the Department of Education continuously

improves itself to better serve its stakeholders. Teachers

facilitate learning and constantly nurture every learner.

The K–12 curriculum in the Philippine education system

aims to ensure that every grade 12 graduate is prepared for

tertiary education. It is an important step in every

student's journey.

Entering senior high school is an important milestone

in every Filipino student's life as they provide the

foundation they need to succeed in higher education and

beyond. Senior high school students struggle with

transitions and make their own decisions. Senior high school

1
is introduced to students with various tracks and strands.

They are also encouraged to select a track or strand based

on their preferred college courses. However, there are some

notable instances in which students enroll in college

courses that are not related to their senior high school

track or strand. A situation like this could cause a student

to falter.

One of the primary reasons why some students lose

interest in college is the disparity between their high

school experiences and college expectations as stated by

Corazon A. Quintos. (C. A. Quintos, et,al. 2022)

The Department of Education has begun to introduce the

new K–12 program, which in the current curriculum acts as a

big transformation. This reform involves enhancing basic

education and expanding the program for basic education to

cover 12 years by including kindergarten and two years in

high school. The new program guarantees that graduates gain

the skills required for entry into the professional world

and reach the requisite age for employment. With the latest

K–12 program in the Philippines, separate tracks are now

being provided in the last two years of basic education.

There are lots of opportunities available to make it

possible for students to find themselves ready for the

courses they need to pursue later in college.

The K–12 education system is critical for providing

students with the academic, career, and decision-making

skills they need to succeed in college and make informed

2
academic decisions. K–12 institutions help students

transition from secondary to postsecondary education by

providing challenging coursework, career exploration

opportunities, counselling, and support services.

Senior High School is the last two years of the K–12

education system, usually for students in grades 11 and 12.

It follows junior high or middle school and comes before

tertiary education. During senior high school, students

improve their academic skills, explore career options, and

prepare for higher education or employment. It frequently

offers specialized tracks tailored to students' interests

and goals, with the goal of providing them with the

knowledge and skills they need to pursue their chosen

careers after graduation.

Students who graduate from senior high school's college

course choices are significantly influenced by a variety of

variables, including what strand they chose to take up

between their eleventh and twelfth grade, as it may lead

them to continue following the academic route they decided

to take before college or move to a different academic field

of study for their undergraduate. Also, their skills,

potential career path, the choice of their parents, peer

pressure, and personal preferences are among these variables

that will influence the choice of students on what college

course they will take apart from their senior high school

strand.

3
Julia Ortiz Luis National High School's Senior High

Department offered two tracks. Academic track has 3 strands,

Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)

Strand. While TVL Track, it has also three strands which are

the Agri- Fishery Arts (AFA) Strand, Home Economics (HE)

Strand, and the Information and Communications Technology

(ICT) Strand.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the phenomena of why do

senior high school students at Julia Ortiz Luis National

High School from their respective strands did not end up

taking related program in their chosen strand. Specifically,

it aims to answer the following questions:

4
1. How may the profile of the respondents be describe it

in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Senior High School Strand

1.4 College Program

2. What are the reasons of the respondents of not ending

up with a college course related to their SHS strand?

3. What are the challenges faced by the respondents of not

ending up with a college course related to their SHS

strand?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The researchers believed that this study would be

significant to the following people:

School: The result of this study will be able to give the

school an insight above the phenomena, and provide a more

comprehensive career guidance for the students.

Parents and Guardians: Parents and guardians play a

significant role in influencing students' educational and

career decisions.
5
Future senior high school students: By using this research

study, this may be a useful tool for upcoming senior high

school students will be better equipped to make decisions,

seek out the right kind of support, and follow career paths

that suit their interests and goals.

Future Researchers: This study provides a wealth of

opportunities for researchers in the future to investigate,

create, and further scholarly work in the fields of

education and youth development.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

This study will be anchored to John Holland's Theory of

Career Choice (RIASEC).

This theory was published in 1985 and states that

having the opportunity to work together with people of

similar personalities influences people's career decisions.

They seek opportunities to apply their knowledge and

abilities, demonstrate their views and decisions, and take

on difficult roles and responsibilities. A person's actions

are influenced by the interaction between their surroundings

and personalities. The six personality types identified by

Holland are Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social,

6
Enterprising, and Conventional (RIASEC). As such, individuals

often search for an environment in which to express their

interest, abilities, and values (Holland, 1985), and the

work environments can be classified by their “resemblance to

a combination of the RIASEC types” (Nauta, 2010).

A career or educational path that best suits your

interests and personality can be selected with the aid of

Holland's Theory. Research is a critical first step towards

a successful career. The most popular and extensively

studied theory regarding what conditions allow us to thrive

at work is Dr. John Holland's Theory, sometimes referred to

as Holland's theory of vocational choice. When measured

using a career interest inventory, career development

professionals use it extensively. Knowing the theory enables

you to choose jobs and educational paths that complement

your personality and set you up for professional success.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This research study will focus solely on why college

students that did not end up taking related program in their

chosen strand. It will investigate and understand the

underlying factors influencing students' decision-making

processes by administering surveys.

Additionally, it aims to provide valuable insights into

the complexities of educational and career decision-making

processes among senior high school students and identify

strategies to support them in making informed choices and

7
pursuing pathways aligned with their interests and

aspirations. This study will be conducted within Santo

Domingo, Nueva Ecija, Philippines, during the second

semester of the academic year 2023-2024.
