THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The Philippines before the implementation of K to 12 was the only Asian country to have

a 10-year education program, and the three countries that still has it implemented along Djbuoti

and Angola in Afrrica (Geronimo, 2013). As the Department of Education, the formal approval

of former President Benigno S. Aquino III and eligibly support from our President Rodrigo R.

Duterte, Senior High School program is now on its second batch of seniors. The curriculum

enriches to the needs of students to be responsive in choosing the specialization that will suit

their field of interests. The mastery of basic competencies and the age of the youth who have

undergone the 10-year basic education were also things the Department of Education needs to be

contend. With the K to 12 education, also, help graduated students the skills needed in the labor

market and prepare responsibilities and opportunity for them to accepted and to work the skills

they acquired.

Senior High School is a part of the K-12 program design by Department of Education

wherein the students will under a core curriculum and subjects under a track based on the

students’ preference. It is curriculum developed in line with the commission on Higher

Education (CHED) which is governing body from tertiary level in the Philippines.

It is also believed to be the solution of the elongated dilemma of the Philippine educational
system because this prepares the students in their entry to collage and equips them with relevant

and globally competitive skills which will foster employment.

It’s true that Senior High School help the student who widen their minds and serves as a

stepping stone in their dreams. But, some which has a noble purpose for every Filipino pupil or

student. From their own point of view or perspective this is another burden on the part of the

students and parents. It will add to the financial problem of the individual family, and the

advantage of implementing this program are for the people who wants to continue studying or

work abroad because of the curriculum is almost parallel to another country. (Anonymous,2013)

As the Educational System of the Philippines change by adding K-12 Programs, there are

certain things that students need to perform. A Junior High School Graduate or Grade 10

Completer must take their next step by choosing their career. It is very important to have already

a decision in choosing your Academic Strand or Track.

According to Kerka (2000), student career choice is influenced by the availability of

information, cultural identity, finance, globalization, interests, personality, role model, self-

concept, social support and socialization while for Bandura et el., (2001) an individual’s career

support choice is influenced by their educational attainment, the context in which they live in,

their personal aptitude and social contacts.

Moreover, Perrone et al., (2001) find that role model supportiveness and quality of

relationship contribute to career choice of students, while Hewitt (2010) posits that individual

career choice is influenced by their educational choices, income, some follow their parent career,
other opt to follow their passion regardless of the income obtained while others consider the

extrinsic factor or intrinsic factors.

According to Boyer (1987), “in taking a course, one of the life’s major decision being

made. A lot of time, money, and effort be involved. The shape and excellence of student’s life

may rest in result.” In choosing a junior, senior academic track, a student should take a risk. F.

Yates Veinotte, and Patalano (2003) define a decision as… “a commitment to a course of action

that is intended to produce a satisfying state of affairs.” A student will choose a course which

he/she will be studying throughout his/her college years, and decision-making should take part

decisions for a student especially those who are graduating High School students.
