INTRODUCTION
One thing that everyone noted of is adding the basic education in which is the two
years in the basic education in which is the K to 12 curriculum, Senior High School that
cover two years (Banal-Formoso, 2016). It is the stage when teenager needs guidance in the
proper selection of the desired career where they will arrive at the right decision considering
their innate capacities, educational privilege offered to the students and other resources that
society makes available for them to be more efficient and effective (DepEd, 2017). Choosing
and deciding on something have consequences, the results of what you have chosen can
either help or hinder the future ( Vallente, Albia, Dollaga, Nobleza. 2015-2016). In choosing
a senior high school strand, a student should take a risk. (F. Yates, Veinotte & Patalanao).
The students should first become aware of the need for a career (Supeer 2005). Bautista
stated that a student must take important and vital decisions in the selection of a career which
will determine his/her future success. Finlayron (2009) mentioned that respect for family is
one of the most influential factors that impact Filipino students career decision. Another is
personality factors to be considered are mental abilities, special abilities and interest (Slaver,
1977). Learning environment is an important base for learning processes of students and for
Decision making is the best way to gets one’s satisfaction, and considered as the best
required thing to do have a successful and very satisfying life (Harris, 1997). Splaver (2000)
went on to say “It is important for you to have a good understanding of yourself, your
personality, if you are to make intelligent upcoming plans”. It is important for the institution
to identify the willingness of the students to pursue the program where interest can be used as
good indicator of career choice Hirschi & Läge (2008). The importance of planning career
plan can enable us to control the direction of our career, decide job skills and knowledge we
As a sign of respect, Filipino children want to do well for the sake of the family,
following parents advice about choosing a job or major in college and lastly, make sacrifices
for the family (Finlayson, 2009). Another study that establishes the influence of personality
on career choice is which focuses on the character strengths of an individual and how it
affects their career (Harzer, 2012). It was found that students who receive help in exploring
careers and planning programs of study related to their career interest are more likely to see
school as meaningful. Sociologists have explored how career decision making is affected by
the social environment. Some of these components of social environment factors include;
family and peer groups are influencing career choice (According to Sear and Gordon’s
book,2002)
Parents have pre-determined the careers for their wards, and only serve to steer them in
that direction (Olayinka, 2005). However, students are known by a combination of personal
abilities, personality type and other factors (Okafor 2012). Afidatul Asma (2015) itemized the
interests which are most likely to contribute to academic success, such as the choice of the
subject field. Environment has a momentous role in the career choice students make and the
Former to education Secretary Armin A. Luistro (2011) claimed that the additional 2
years of high school will be essential and not waste of time to every students but it will help
the students to decide in what course they will take in college and also it will help the
students to master their different field of specialization. By prolonging the basic education,
that is, adding two years in high school, the program ensures that graduates earn the
necessary skills and reach the legal age for employment to qualify entrance into the world of
work, if they desire or need to do so. On the other hand, graduates who go to tertiary
education are deemed better prepared for college study (SEAMEO INNOTECH, 2012).
