Distance Learning; Advantages and Disadvantages?

A few years ago, distance learning belonged to an inferior way in
education. Schools, colleges, and universities recently provide distance
learning a way to make learning or courses effective and efficient. People
argue whether distance learning provide more advantages or
disadvantages.
Distance learning is mainly to improve people’s life. It needs no
commuting. It saves finance, time and energy that students definitely
take. Distance learning can be done at any student’s convenience. Most distance learning classes are
asynchronous so that students do not have to attend a class at a fixed time and place. Students can
review the assignments and do the homeworks during off-hours or from home. Additionally, distance
learning provides more accessibility. Students with limited mobility may encounter the problem when
they take a conventional class. The online class overcomes the problems.
Some others see that distance learning is costly and involves complex technology. To attend an
online class, students must have computer with properly access to internet. Such technology devices
are not always available for common students. Furthermore, distance learning does not provide
immediate feedback. Unlikely a conventional class, students have to wait for the feedback and
comment until the teachers or instructors review the students’ works and send them the responses.
Students will study self-reliantly for most of the time. Distance learners may feel isolated or miss
social and physical interaction that comes with attending a conventional class.
Regarding the individual learning style, some students are able to learn in a live interaction
among them and available of accompanying teachers or instructors. Some others don’t really need it.
Before deciding to attend distance learning, students need to do a fair analysis regarding what kind of
learners they belong to. (As.283)

Gadget Review; Lenovo ThinkPad Helix; All-in-One Device

Helix is the latest ultra-book convertible offered in Indonesia, the
biggest market potential in Southeast Asia, by the Taiwan-based device
manufacturer.
Launched last Thursday in Jakarta, Helix is a follow up to the
IdeaPad Yoga, which was went on the market in the first quarter of the
2013. Helix is a premium-segment which boasts the “rip and flip” form.
Users could detach the touch screen, which doubles as a tablet from the
keyboard. Helix form enables users to re-attach the screen facing the audience, a handy function
when conducting presentations.
Helix is best-suited for those who multitask. Powered by Intel chips to support Windows 8
platform, Helix enables various split screen functions. Users can view a second screen in a sidebar
and drag the sidebar sideways to enlarge the screen. They can also display a list of icons of all the
running programs in this sidebar instead, dragging an icon into the main screen to see the contents in
full size. Users can choose a variety of ways to input text as well.
The tablet allows users to utilize its virtual keyboard and stylus, the Digitizer Pen, to type or
write. The stylus smoothly cures handwritten input and e-mails, the device converts the handwritten
text and cursive text into typed text with a high accuracy. The slim expansive 11.6 inch tablet
provides optimal viewing of photos and videos. When held vertically, it can display more content of
a page.
However, Helix’s casing gives off a sturdy feel, the 0.8 kg tablet is hefty compared to other
tablets in the market. The weight and size makes it heavy on the wrists and reduces the tablet’s

“Kartini; A Film”
“A pioneer of education and rights for Indonesian women.”
Reviewed by Helen Pausacker

Kartini, a drama biographical film, portrays the patriarchal and highly

stratified Javanese culture.
Kartini was a pioneer in girls’ education and women’s rights. Early 1900s,
under the Dutch colony, only noble and royal family could get education. Being
from a more ‘progressive’ family, Kartini was allowed to continue her education
with a private teacher. Generally, Javanese women weren’t permitted to get
higher education. They only had one purpose-to be a bride for a man with royal
blood. Kartini fought for equality for women and right to get education
regardless of their social status or gender.
Although the elite had power, it was largely in the hands of men. The film demonstrates a
number of customs and traditions which oppressed women such as secluding women until getting
married, the arranged marriages, and polygamy. Kartini’ emotional journey occurred when she had to
defy her own family; rebelled against rules and traditions considered sacred in Java.
The ending in which Kartini accepts a polygamous marriage rather than passing away in
childbirth seems to create an unreal ‘happy ending’. Capturing Kartini’s messages is still relevant for
women’s contemporary activism of Indonesia. They’re challenging patriarchal and feudalistic
traditions. They’re struggling for equality of education, child marriage, child trafficking, and defining
their roles in private and public spaces.
